Ford has formally confirmed that S197 Mustang Bullitt production will extend into the 2009 model year, but will not go beyond the 7,700 units previously announced. Dan Jarvis, Ford Motor Company, Car Communications & Launch, confirmed the details with IMBOC late Friday.
"We absolutely will honor our original statement about building 7,700 Bullitts. We will not build BULLITT beyond the 7700 announced." Dan stated in email, "We built about 5,600 for the 2008 model year, and the rest will be 2009s."
In addition, Dan provided clarity on other questions that have been raised by the Mustang BULLITT community:
- The glass roof and 45th anniversary badging will not be an option for the 2009 Mustang Bullitt
- The vehicles will continue to be numbered sequentially, and will not start over with the 09 model
IMBOC will continue to engage with Ford on the 2008 (and 2009) Mustang BULLITT production details. Watch IMBOC.com for additional information.

[From the Ford Performance Group]

Calling All Mustang Enthusiasts!
As a follow-up to the previous article, the new Ford Performance Group and Ford Racing would like to invite Mustang owners to participate in a Mustang car corral and other special activities planned during the Mitty/Mustang Challenge Weekend, May 2-4 at Road Atlanta.
In addition to the racing on track, we are happy to announce that 1989 Trans-Am Champion, Mustang racer, and Speed TV personality Dorsey Schroeder has agreed to attend the event and to spend time in the Corral, signing autographs and talking "Mustang" with those who join us.
Dorsey will also wave the green flag to start the inaugural race in the all-new Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup, a series featuring the FR500S Mustang. Also running that weekend will be up to 500 vintage race cars including classic Ford-powered race cars.
To help celebrate this historic event, the Ford Performance Group has arranged for the "Ford Performance Mustang Corral" for you to park in over the entire weekend -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is also the opportunity for you to participate in a lunchtime parade lap on the Road Atlanta race course (limited to 100 cars per day).
Plus the first 200 cars to register for inclusion in the Ford Performance Mustang Corral will receive a special Ford Racing dash plaque commemorating this inaugural event.
Other planned activities for Mustang owners participating in our special Ford Performance Mustang Corral include:
- Autograph sessions with Dorsey Schroeder and Bob Bondurant
- Access to the Mitty vintage racing and Mustang Challenge pits
- Free autocrossing in Mazda MX-5 Miatas
- Manufacturers midway with over 40 vendors
- Famous Ford Racing cars on display and on the track
- A swap meet area and classic motorcycle display
- Free slot-car racing and dart tournament
We'd like to get as many of the Atlanta and other Southeast region Mustang owners as possible to participate. Again, the Ford Performance Mustang Corral will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Mustang owners wishing to join us at this special event are asked to visit www.grmspeedfest.com for additional event, ticket and parking pass information.
Once at the track infield entrance, Mustang owners will simply tell the track rep that they are with the Mustang Car Corral and will be directed to the dedicated Mustang display area and tent. There, they will have a chance to mingle, tour the pits, meet Ford Racing engineers and celebrities, and get the chance to participate in an on-track parade lap each day at lunchtime, as well as take part in all of the other activities mentioned above -- including the weekend full of racing action, right on up to the history making, first-ever Mustang Challenge race on Saturday.
Please contact Andrew Casselberry ( or 1-313-248-1144) of the Ford Performance Group to reserve your spot or if you have any questions.

Calling all Mustang enthusiasts of the IMBOC!
The new Ford Performance Group and Ford Racing would like to invite members of the IMBOC to participate in a Mustang car corral and other special activities planned during the Mitty/Mustang Challenge Weekend, May 2-4 at Road Atlanta.
The event will include the inaugural race in the all-new Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup, a series featuring the FR500S. Also running that weekend will be up to 500 vintage race cars including classic Ford-powered race cars (the Mitty's featured marque this year is Ford). Among the classic Fords doing battle in the Historic Sports Racer run groups, Saturday will showcase the debut of the 2008 FR500S Mustang in the first race of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup.
Plus the first 200 cars to register for inclusion in the Ford Performance Mustang Corral will receive a special Ford Racing dash plaque commemorating this special event.
What's more, media and club officials will be asked to join us in selecting the best of each generation of Mustang in the corral to recognize the owner whose car most truly captured or retained the "Spirit of Ford Performance" from their particular production era. These cars can receive special media coverage and will represent the Mustang brand in a special pre-race parade lap just before the Mustang Challenge season opener. Finally, we'll ask the club to select the car best representing it and its members to serve as the official parade car for the Mustang Challenge race on Saturday.
Other planned activities for MCA members participating in our special Ford Performance Mustang Corral include:
- Access to the Mitty vintage racing and Mustang Challenge pits
- Autograph session with Bob Bondurant and other Ford Racing celebrities
- Free autocrossing in Mazda MX-5s Miatas
- Manufacturers midway with over 40 vendors, including a portable chassis dyno for dyno tests
- Famous Ford Racing cars on display
- A swap meet area and classic motorcycle display
- Free slot-car racing and dart tournament
We'd like to get as many of the MCA's Atlanta and other Southeast region members as possible to participate. Again, the Ford Performance Mustang Corral will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Mustang owners wishing to join us at this special event are asked to visit www.grmspeedfest.com for additional event and ticket information. Once at the track entrance, club members will simply tell the track rep that they are with the car corral and will be directed to the dedicated Mustang Corral display area and tent. The 2009 Mustang Inferno will be built at AutoAlliance International in Flat Rock, Mich. It goes on sale late this year. Press materials and visuals of the new 2009 Mustang Bullitt will be available soon at www.media.ford.com.
About Ford Motor Company
Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., had absolutely nothing to do with this press release, as it was a pathetic attempt at 04/01 humor. With about 260,000 employees and about 100 plants worldwide, the company’s core and affiliated automotive brands include Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo and Mazda. Not a Bullitthead?
Don’t know how to spell Bullitt?
Wondering why Bullitt is spelled B-U-L-L-I-T-T?
STOP! You are in need of Bullitt education the YouTube way. So, sit back and spend the next 9 or 10 minutes watching this video.
Where to begin?
It is 11:00 am in Flat Rock, Michigan. We have just pulled into the Ford facility on International Drive. Mike (B-Man) and I traveled together while Collin drove his amazing 2001 Bullitt. The sun is shining and there is a strong wind blowing from Kalamazoo. At this point, I’m the observer in charge of capturing video. Mike is the driver and Collin (Cochese) the still photographer. As we enter the facility, Mike quickly spots the 08 Bullitt heading up International drive. I can’t really document his first words here and still maintain a “PG” rating, but it is safe to assume he was excited.
A quick meeting with representatives from Ford, identification verified, paperwork signed and Mike realized he holds the keys to a beautiful 2008 Highland Green pilot production Bullitt. At this point, Collin is hoping around taking pictures and I bolt for my video camera.
Mike waste no time landing his 6 foot 3 frame into the driver’s seat and quickly has seat, mirrors and wheel configured to his liking. I’m trying to hold the video camera steady to capture Mike’s initial drive, but I can’t quite keep my hand steady. I claim it is due to the stiff wind and 30 degree temperature.
As Mike pulls away and we hear the exhaust for the first time, I immediately find myself recalling Steve McQueen on the streets in San Francisco, CA. As Mike leaves the lot with a start, I hear the 2008 open up to run and it is all Bullitt. I’m convinced that the Ford engineers absolutely nailed reproducing the original 1968 sound.
First, the Beauty
Is beauty is only skin deep? Think of Jacqueline Bisset. Doesn’t do it for you? How about the famous 1978 poster of Farrah Fawcett Majors in that red swim suit? Recall how you could just stare for hours. Well, once you cast your eyes on the 2008 Bullitt, you may find yourself in that same trance again. The Ford team really hit the minimalist mark with 08 and matched the famous GT390 from the movie. Outside, this car is stunning from the ground up. The stance is firm on 18” wheels with BFGoodrich G-Force performance rubber. From the nose this car looks ready to chew up the asphalt. From the side you immediately notice the lack of red! Gone are the red calipers! The next word to surface for me was “Balance”.
Remember my earlier reference to Farrah Fawcett Majors? Well from the rear of the Bullitt, I find myself back in that same trance.
• The faux cap with signature gun site emblem
• Straight body lines
• Highland Green paint
• Minimalist styling
• Balance, balance, balance
Open the door and slide inside to an outstanding interior. First thing you notice is how the seat wraps around every inch of your body. If this is what assimilation with a machine feels like, then bring it on! The finish inside the cockpit is focused on you, the driver. Layout and positioning of the gauge cluster is just what you would expect for a car designed to run and run hard – balance!
Spend a few seconds adjusting seat, wheel and mirrors and you quickly feel as if this car was built around you, the driver – balance!
Takeoff, the Beast unleashed
Turn the key and the beast awakens with a roar all the way from the streets of San Francisco, CA. The gauge cluster comes alive to alert you that you have awakened the beast. While the navigation/audio/Sirius system might initially grab your attention, I found my eyes quickly returning to the gauge cluster front and center.
I got no time for music, it is time to run!
I got no need for navigation system, because I got no destination beyond the open road.
While my right hand fondled the aluminum ball atop the shifter, my left foot worked the clutch finding the contact points to unleash the beast. As I accelerated car & driver were functioning as one and having the time of their life.
Steering is tight and quick and I found no issues with body roll. The car tracks to the demands of the driver and my demands were exceeded. Net result, driver is constantly grinning like the Cheshire cat! As I tooled down Interstate 75, I quickly found myself dreaming of driving the Bullitt down highway 1 from San Francisco to Carmel, CA.
Shift throw surprised me in that it was short and smooth for what is not classified as a short throw shifter. Matched to a wonderful feeling clutch and it was quite easy to find hand and foot working in perfect synchronization.
Final Thoughts
The audio tone. Ford engineering nailed the audio profile - PERIOD!
Exhaust tone at idle and speed gives you a spooky feeling. Close your eyes and you may immediately experience visual recalls Steve racing through San Francisco.
Interior styling is drop dead, stare for hours gorgeous. Interior is all Bullitt and about the only thing I found somewhat amusing was the multi-color lighting.
Otherwise, no matter where I was looking or what I was doing. The only word that consistently echoed in my head was “BULLITT”.

Chris Bendel
(Editor note: Chris is a co-worker of mine, and drove up to Flatrock with Cochese and I to pick up PP06 for a week long IMBOC evaluation, in late 2007 - B-Man)

While very few of us will admit it, we have an addiction and its name is “Bullitt." Whether it is a 01, 08 or movie replica we all share a common enemy. It pulls you in by the good looks... saying come on try me you can walk away if you don't like me. Then it's "just" a test drive, seems innocent enough. But don't be fooled you are already hooked. First you slide into those comfortable seats, seem to fit you like a glove. Then you turn the key and hear the exhaust like a song of a siren calling you. Of course the salesman has to come with you but you don't hear a word he says. As you put her through the gears the song gets louder. You want me. Like a temptress vying for your affection she reveals all of her charms. As you pull back into the parking lot you are no longer in control. With robot like precision you do whatever it takes to get this Bullitt home. That is how it starts.
Then there are the late night detailing sessions, the secret purchases of mods that you hope will go unnoticed on the credit card. Long hours spent on the internet reading through thousands of posts on IMBOC needing to know more about this "Bullitt." The ebay purchases of movie memorabilia or posters that depict your Bullitt in all its glory. Yes, you are hooked. The trance like state you are in when you look into the garage and are drawn in. At first only a few minutes go by. Then it's hours cleaning a spec of dirt off. Maybe you are all the way to jacking the car up and cleaning the underside of you car even though it's a daily driver.
But some say I ordered mine and didn't test drive it. How could I be "hooked" Well my friend did you see the press release photos and feel just some great need to call or better yet drive as fast as you could down to your local Ford dealer and tell the salesman get me a Bullitt? Or did it come on slowly with just a passing glance at the photos then looking at them every day building up to an insatiable urge that could only be satisfied by plunking down earnest money on a car you had never even seen in person. Ahh yes I thought so. As you wait for your car to be delivered, do you look over and over at pictures, do you go to the Ford Bullitt site just to hear the siren song of the exhaust? My friend you are hooked.
For someone Bullitt isn't enough. They buy two sometimes three 01 Bullitts. Or an 08 when they have an 01. The humanity of it all. When does it stop? When you have one of every color and year plus a movie replica? Do you give up your house in the burbs to buy an airplane hanger so that none of your Bullitts sit outside? What Bullitt do you drive when you are in this deep? What happens when other family members are sucked in? It just feeds on itself.
A cure you ask. Can’t I just sell the "BULLITT" and I will get over my addiction? I am afraid not. Several have tried and have gone on to live normal lives. But even after the car has departed the need for a Bullitt fix is so great they live vicariously through others on IMBOC. You know who you are. Coming by for a chat. Helping other members out with their "Bullitt" issues. Think you've kicked the habit? I don't think so. You still hear that siren song.
If you are reading this it's probably already to late to save yourself. You are destined to a life of great friends you will meet, wonderful memories and driving a fantastic car. I for one am glad I have the Bullitt addiction.
My name is Greg and I am a Bullitthead.
