I've been wrestling with this decision for over 6+ weeks now since I saw the vehicle and the Pony on the front of the vehicle.
Could it have been called something other than a Mustang? Sure. What should have it been called?
Taurus, Fairlane, Windstar, Maverick, Galaxie, Thunderbird.....a whole new, unique name? I thought Thunderbolt would have been a cool name for it.....but that would upset those who worshiped the 10 months of competitiveness that the Fairlane Thunderbolts experienced back in 1964. Yes look up, the 1965 NHRA schedule.
A lot of effort would have needed to been put in place to grow a new name for this car...with no guarantee of success.
So another name is selected and this CUV shows up at the Ford dealerships, along side of the current Mustang line-up.
Except for the GT500 and possibly the GT350, this vehicle will outperform the rest of the Mustang line up. How is that for diluting the 'Mustang' brand? A Fairlane outperforming a Mustang GT?
The dirty little secret on the current EVs is that it is not about saving the environment, but totally about performance and image. Visit the Tesla's website. Witness the Porsche vs. Tesla performance at the Nürburgring. No one discusses the Nissan Leaf or the Chevy Bolt, both outstanding cars. The Bolt is going out of production....that had an effect on Ford's product development decision.
The second dirty secret about EVs is that they are focused on leading edge or fast followers consumers. Not the common vehicle consumer. That is years down the road. The EV is either the third, fourth or fifth vehicle a consumer owns in this segment....it may be their daily driver but they have a lot of golf clubs in the bag. The market for these individuals is wide open. Especially since the Tesla Tax Credit ends on 12/31/2109. Ford has a long ways on using up their credits and the Mach E will be a bargain in comparison to anything Tesla or Porsche offer.
I've been involved with the automotive industry for over 41 years, all of it either directly or indirectly with the Ford Motor Company. Yes, i struggled with this naming decision......but after listening to Hau Thai-Thang discuss the whole EV segment and talking with fellow engineers, I'm OK with this direction.
Change is going to happen.
