SAE Paper 2016-01-1484 Why Simulation?

I stumbled across this SAE Technical Paper yesterday.

It is an interesting way for the Engineering Dynamics Corporation to feature/exhibit their Highway Safety Research software.

Since it is an SAE Paper, one must purchase it from SAE. However, one can read the Abstract to understand what conclusions they derived from modeling and analyzing the Bullitt Chase Scene.

Why Simulation? An Interesting Case Study

That could be an interesting paper. They've always pushed the narrative that the film was done at actual speed, so their conclusion obviously conflicts with that. It would be interesting to know the real story. I know there has been some other simulation work done where drivers were able to run faster than the calculated "perfect" lap. Those were nowhere near 20% off, though. Thanks for the link.

Like all of Hollywood, they are about the mystery of the reality. In other words making something they have faked, look real. Embellishments abound!

Heck, several of us have driven the road course in S.F. I doubt that any of us would agree to driving that at what they have said they drove it. Even if I had no cares about the car, I certainly wouldn't make a rip at that doing what they say they did it at.

My name is David J. Midgley. But you doesn't have to call me that. You can call me David. Or you can call me David J. Or you can call me David Midgley. But you doesn't have to call me David J. Midgley....

So are they saying they filmed at a higher speed to give the illusion of the higher speeds? In order to get the cars airborne and remain for the extended time they had to be going at a pretty high rate of speed.

All I know is that I still consider it the best car chase scene of all time...
