I did the same with one of my bandanas. Dr. Oz demonstrated how to make one the other day

During the SARS pandemic back in 03/04 there was talk about wearing masks in schools, (I was a teacher in inner city Toronto). Problem is, that if you don't use them properly you are likely to infect yourself. You have to wash your hands properly, put on the mask using the elastic fasteners, don't touch the mask after, remove it using the elastics, dispose into a plastic bag lined garbage can, and then wash your hands properly again. Your eyes are not protected and a virus can enter that way as well. If you look at nurses when they are geared up, their whole face is protected.
The average person touches their face a lot. So don't touch your face or eyes and wash your hands frequently. N 95 masks are in short supply for the medical people, and unless you are sick, a mask may not be that useful in preventing viral transfer.
That said, the shop towel mask is pretty simple to make.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Garage
Another great example & betting most of us have these shop towels handy...preferably unused/non-greasy.

Here in my county, health officer is directing all persons to cover face with mask, bandana, scarf etc when outside. Anything is better than nothing when outside with the public. Stay safe everyone, someone's life may depend on it.

Hang in there Mike, it must be hard to deal with all this day to day. As we say up here in Canada, "keep your stick on the ice, we're pulling for you."

More than the mask, I am more concerned about physical contact with a contaminated surface. I can keep my distance and avoid people but you never know what someone may have touched and left the virus. As I understand, it can survive for hours on surfaces. I do wear gloves and wipe then down with alcohol wipes before removing. Just got another large box of latex gloves from Lowes yesterday.
