Anybody else read the new Motortrend that came out today??? 2003 Cobra on the cover. The assumptions were correct, they are not calling it the Terminator. But it still is supercharged and cranking out 390 hp. If you see the article, check out the spoiler and the rear bumper..... they are the closest i've seen to the concept Bullitt. (the spoiler is a little bigger) I think I speak for everyone when I say It's about time for the Cobra to get some serious power!

Heeeeeeeeeeeeyyy.. That's got the Bullitt's pedal set.
Nice to see that we're not only tops in people wanting Bullitt parts aftermarket but it looks like we're invading the Cobra's as well.
Anyhow, that was a great article.. it's great to see the Cobra finally getting some more of the power that it deserves. And at >$35k it looks like a steal.

What did you think about the hood? It has the double reversed scoops (kind of like the Saleen). I'd like to see it on our cars!! Another step closer to the '68.

Looks like that hood would be a nice switch for our cars in 2003.

northern bullitt, i must respectfully disagree. While the article says it was because the aluminum blocks had problems of some sort, i feel its a cover. Ford doesn't want to spend the extra money to make the aluminum block. They figure they can stick a tried and true and cheap iron block in there. I think this is part of the money saving tricks by ford. There are several aluminum blocked 4.6 dohc supercharged engines. They make 800rwhp and live just fine. Again, i think its cost cutting on fords part.

It is about time the Cobra starts to dominate again! I can't believe they only lowered it .25" though. They really need to get it lower. I too wondered why the iron block but i believe they are looking at life cycle with the 8psi boost from the Roots-type blower. This is a concept driver so I would expect to see a few changes yet before it starts to appear in a few months. My hats off though, it is about time we start to challenge again. Incase you are interested they also have a article online about the GT40 concept at MT http://www.motortrend.com/jan02/gt40/gt40_f.html. I felt like Homer Simpson drewling when I read the article! :-B

speaking of the rear did you notice the rear bumper cover?
sure look like the bumper cover of the Bullitt prototype (except for cobra letter)
also check carefully the wing and you will see they are very similar to proto!

It's also going to be a bit nose heavy....Not to good for traction at the track! Also, while listening to Art Hyde,on that Mustang radio show,he personaly prefers the solid axle setup for drag and road racing! He said the current IRS wasn't designed for hard launches......mainly a casual street only piece. I think the Mach 1,with the 300 HP version,of the Cobra engine, will be the better deal for the money. The Cobra is still going to be one fast production Mustang, but it is starting to get too pricey for a Mustang!! You know I would like to see them put one of their Crate engines,351, into a bare bones V6 type Stang, only color white, standard skinny tires and wheels, sold as is no warranty, intended for drag race use..something to build on. Drag Pack Mustang!!!$23,000!!

Well--so far I have 1/2 of the Board bent at me for telling them the truth about Highland Green and Dark Highland Green and Ford's cost savings on the Bullitt with the intentional use of the wrong color. So now how many folks are going to be upset when I advise them that the new Cobra wing/spoiler is indeed very close to the Bullitt Prototype but that Team Mustang stole it from the Cobra in the first place when they put it on the Bullitt prototype. That wing/spoiler was supposed to go on the 99 Cobra but Ford and SVT had issues with crash test damage (think rear bumper tests taking out the spoiler) as well as production fit issues. While Ford engineers continued to work on it the Bullitt designers took the spoiler and modified it for the Bullitt Show car. So... its really not a case of SVT/Cobra taking from the Bullitt but the other way around. Sorry.
Question for the Board-which came first: the 'Bulltt' car or the Retrostyle Torque Thruster/Bullitt wheels that are found on the Bullitt and 2001 Premium GT's??

Not exactly, the Bullitt was a Team Mustang project that included the help of Roush. As for the concept car's body styling, to include the rear wing that too was a Roush design project. As for the wheels it already widely known and accepted that the decision was made to put the wheels on the Bullitt after first seeing the design changes for the 2001 MY

Roushraven99-correct on Roush's involvment but per Art Hyde in his Mustang
Times piece on the differences between the Bullitt Show Car and the Production model he was very specific that the show car spoiler design came from the 99 Cobra Program--of course Roush was involved with that car also. Art also cited fit and crash test problems as to the reasons the spoiler didn't go on the 99 Cobra - I wonder what happend between 99 and 03??

Maybe it was just easier and more cost effective. In any case the new design should be a hit for those looking for a less "in your face" design.

One more from me....I still don't understand why Ford lost faith in their aluminum block, for only 390 HP? Seems like they'er doing the reverse of other manufacturers, who in some cases get more HP per liter with an aluminum block. What does that say about all the supercharged Cobras running around....on borrowed time maybe!!!

2 words for you: Cost Cutting

That's why Ford went to the iron block for the Cobra. They already produce how many iron 4.6L blocks, so adding a few more isn't a big deal. The aluminum blocks aren't made in the same tooling that the iron blocks are (correct me if I'm wrong Mr. T), so by eliminating the aluminum block, they can cut the cost of the car.

Besides, the iron block will hold up. 4.6L SOHC Mustangs have been running superchargers since late '96. The plastic intakes give out long before the blocks do on those cars...and the Cobra intake isn't plastic, so that problem is solved.

I'm with some of you and think that Ford should definately be putting those kinds of numbers out N/A, but at least they had the balls to put a charger on them. And I haven't heard any of the Lightning guys complaining.

I disagree that they used the cast iron block to save money and then add an aluminum fly wheel and drive shaft to save weight caused by the block. The engine has to be durable and last at least 100,000 miles. From just the posts on this sight about the durability of our engine, it doesn't surprise me they went with the iron block. They can't afford any more bad publicity about quality if they supercharged the aluminum engine and it started falling apart a year or two after production.
