Great shots and what a run home, 105 in the desert and then hail. Nice framing on the shots, nice to see them. Thanks Jeff.

Looks good Rocky. Once I get paid again, I hope to make it back here. I missed ordering before the event, so maybe I can get some goodies now? ;-)

Yes, we did. I met a truck driver while driving the section from Chicago to Tulsa last week. He said you could spend a year traveling the route and still miss places to visit. I told him I had two days to cover the eastern half. He just laughed at me, and said that I would be back...I think he's correct. I'll be back.

Watching billy connellys route 66 show on ...Tv ...wow we missed alot of stuff
Chris,
That was one take away for everyone.....what we managed to see in a week was only some key highlights. There is simply no way to see all of 66 in a week....or two....or even three...or longer....
If nothing else, the trip should encourage you to return to key areas and do more exploring.

I have said it before, and it is true....
I have traveled the western half of 66 countless times as an adult in the past 20 years, as well as a kid during the waning days of 66 heyday in the 60/70's.
And I can attest to the point that I see something new on every trip.

Epilogue of the LLT

Well today I got up all full of vim, vigor and vitality....then I looked at my workstation. Yeah, that workstation. The one with all the paperwork and reciepts from the past couple of months trips on the LLT, Chicago and the Rt.66 run west after all the LLT folks had already gone home....

In the course of the clean up, I organized all the reciepts for gas, hotel and the like to just do a decent cost comparison of current trips and previous trips taken for fun and work.
After a bunch of number crunching, nashing of teeth (just where did we go and why did we do that? Really?) and the like that comes with paying bills and accounting for where the $$$ went. I have some results of the two trips.

1) Gas mileage on the 01 Bullitt is slightly better on the LLT, than the Honda Odyssey was on the Rt.66 form Chicago to DFW. Really! My 01 Bullitt averaged just over 28 mpg! Not bad considering it was above the speed limit most of the way, and Heaven knows ( as do Paul and Kayla know) that I wasn't too easy on the gas pedal while at Chino Hills..... I love this 01 more every time I drive it.
The Honda barely broke 27 mpg, and most of the time it was driven with care (it isn't mine) and was coddled most of the way. Especially while on Rt. 66 from Chicago to the DFW Metromess!

2) The total cost to me for the LLT and Friends of Steve McQueen Car Show was something just over $2K. Not bad for 10 days of fun, good if not great hotels, two days in Vegas with some notable folks(yeah I cheaped out there, but just a little), two days in Chino Hills with some notable folks here too! Then the drive back.

3) The Bullitt traveled just over 3K miles on the entire trip, starting in DFW heading to Yukon and joining the LLT, doing the drive and heading home to DFW. The Honda did just over 2K miles in 8 days, wasn't anywhere near as fun to drive, but got us (three dogs, a cat, wife and full grown son), plus all kinds of necessary uglies for our convention, there and back safely.

Would I do it again? Yup! Not in a heartbeat, but the Route 66 hasn't not been fully taken off my Bucket List of things to do. It's just moved down to a lower position, as I have some other route's to take first. I'm thinking of the PCH, Alaskan Highway, and a couple of others. :)

yup, we are already knee deep in our plans for 2013...shaping up to be some great times.

Both coasts will have options available to them...with Panama City Beach FL as well as San Francisco events...with typical HoonDog surprises in the works!

As with the Legend Lives, all HoonDog Bullitt events provide charitable support for Boys Republic, IMBOC's official charity. So, let's do it for the kids...but...let's have fun doing it!!!!

I think someone from the Northwest has taken some liberties in quoting my post!

There are McDonald's in just about any city of any size. Pick your burger, not your nose!

And just for the record, I beleive you were looking at my exhaust pipes more than I was yours.....!!!!!!!!! :py2:

David,

Your car is a super car when it comes to gas mileage!!!!!

I just sat down and looked through everything and here are the numbers from our trip.

5,002.9 = Total miles door to door
2,411.2 = Miles to the Ayres Hotel in Chino Hills
2,591.7 = Miles from the Ayres on June 1 to our house along the northern route

239.733 = total gallons of gas
$888.39 = total cost of said gas
$3.71 = price per gallon (average)
20.869 = Average MPG
122.182 = Gallons of gas on the way out @ 19.734 MPG (average)
117.551 = Gallons of gas on the way back @ 22.047 MPG (average)

Total cost for the entire trip with the LLT group and seeing the American west with Emma = Priceless!!!!

Thanks Jeff,

The car keeps surprising me on the mpg recieved on trips. The FofSM Car Show trip in 2010 mpg was just 27.6 or 27.7... ;-) It seems to be loosening up as the miles build. I am nutty meticulous about not doing anything to comprimise the mpg or the cars' stockness.
When I bought it the thing had a K & N filter. I know all the talk and advertising about how much your car will improve horsepower output and mpg using their product. I just cannot buy into any of it based on the way this Bullitt has performed.
I got rid of the filter after my trip to SF in 2006, as the MAF sensor was oily and the idle was high. I had the IAC and ECM replaced and the latest program installed.
It also had the fender attached rubber coupling removed, which I reinstalled at this time. That seems to have given the biggest bump in mpg and driveablity. Although, imho the Kumho Ecstas are probably more efficient than the Goodyears were, and not by a little. I do know they are quieter, grippier in the wet and dry, plus seem to have a smoother ride. Also, I should add that these tires are stock size, nothing wide like 285 or 315s.....that's got to do something for mpg. ;-) Just saying.

I do remember, when it was relatively new (to me in 2006) and I drove it from florida to Texas after picking it up at Palm Coast Ford that it could barely manage 24 mpg. Later that summer we drove out to SF for the Gnats and it did a little better, IIRC it was about 25.5 mpg. But those days it had little over 8K miles on the clock.

Now it's pushing 32K miles, bone stock and doing just fine ( fingers crossed here). Fairly low miles, and I am doubting that this is one car that I will wear out... Not exactly burning up the road, but still driven a couple times a month for more than a trip around the block.

What were you buying for gas? Mid grade? I didn't think to do an average price on the gas, and failed to split the out/back usage. I do know that once we got west of the Continental Divide the mpg jumped up a mpg or so also. but that was wiped out on the return climbing the Rockies heading east.... I didn't notice an improvement once I was east of the divide east bound either... *shrugs*. I think that maybe you burned a little more while leading the pack going out, where once you were doing your return trip you didn't have to work the group mode. You just drove your trip. It's got to have done something for the usage factor. ;-)

3230's 302 was still relatively low miles and probably still seating the chrome rings. Best I was able to get prior to the trip was 17mpg.
But as time went on during the LL tour the engine seemed to get stronger, and the mileage rose....the first half of the trip was averaging 16-18mpg, the second half of the trip rose to 18-20mpg...with a lot more weight as well!
I was very happy, because I had budgeted for $4+/gal premium at 16mpg...so my total was a few hundred less than anticipated!

No where near what I got in stock configuration, when I could squeeze out 24-28 mpg on long road trips. But...no where near as fun either!

Yup....at any price...the trip across 66 with a bunch of Bullittheads was simply priceless!
