What are the effects of driving around in 4th between 2800- 3200 RPM on the highway instead of upshifting to 5th? I know it decrease gas mileage but does it decrease engine life?I just took a 1000 mile trip in the car and kept it in 4th over half of the trip. It sounds so sweet. I plan to make this a track- only car when I reach 40-50,000 miles. Thanks.

You might not get the mileage if you drive the freeways all the time.

4th's final ratio is 1.00. That's what all of the cars had before 5 speeds came along.

It will not hurt your engine one bit. In fact, it will probably keep it running better 'cause it will stay cleaned out. Lugging around at low RPM's really loads up a motor. I drive in 4th exclusively on the highway, unless I'm up for a power trip at 90 or 100 MPH. Even then, a drop into 4th just feels right.
