Ok silly question.
I know some of our members here have 68 Stangs and my question is as far as a stock 68 390 GT vs our 2001 Bullitt, how would they compare??? REMEMBER stock vs stock.
Thanks

Comparisons of old/new pony/muscle cars is not easy and probably shouldn't be attempted. Everything is different-from transmissions to suspension to tires. Even hp ratings are no longer equal-gross ratings then to net ratings now. A huge change has gone on in tire development. Let's not forget aerodynamics.

0-60 the 01 wins
1/4 mile the 01 wins
top speed, not even close 01 wins by a good 25 mph if not more (think aero on this one)
handling-01 on a skid pad test
by the seat of the pants torque and tire spin-the 68. The instant on torque of those engines just feels different than todays cars.

Very few 60's muscle cars-stock could run 1/4 mile times under 14 secs. Those that did often had 'drag packs' with 4.10 to 4.56 rear ends. The cars were also often 'quietly modified'-acid dipped bodies to lighten them, etc . Many Ford tests came out of a dealership in SC-a dealership that just happened to be down the street from Holman Moody garage-a little pretest engine tuning anyone??? Get the idea. The best of the era in stock form was the Mach 1 with a 428 Cobra Jet (69-70). That car could run mid to low 13's-it also had as stock a 3.50 rear end. The Bullitt is good into the 13.7', at least--change the rearend from 3.27 to 3.55's and you will beat the original Mach 1 Cobra Jet--of course you are also running a much wider and better tire etc.

I've never seen a Bullitt go 13.7 on the tires it came with, but a '68 1/2 428 Cobra Jet can go 13.5 on the tires it had. I have not found anything on the 390 yet, but they were not as quick. My '68 only has a 302 and my Bullitt can do everything better, but the '68 has a cool factor that's second to none. All things considered, I can't tell you which one I prefer.

Let me tell you a 01 bullitt will do the 1/4 mile in 13.7 stock i have done it numerous times it just takes some time getting used to and you gotta let the air out of the tires ... 13.7 at 101.9 mph

I have owned both cars andin all fairness it is comparing apples to grapefruits.... the technology in every ay is different, the feel is different,everything.. my 390 was fast but not as fast as the bullit nor as quick.... I love the feel of both cars but in all candor...I fully appreciate the bullitt much more... handling, braking, acceleration, creature comforts.... it's even ahead of my original 70 boss302... it truly is the best balanced mustang ford has ever made... and I have owned just about everyone performance mustang that ford or shelby has made. ( being an old man has its advantages sometimes...lol)... just my opnion of course and that is no dig on any of the classic ponies

One mag tested the 390 at 15.2 in the 1/4. That sounds too slow to me. I think a 289 k can beat that. Maybe it was an auto. Also, there was no mention of gears. I've seen these cars drop 4 tenths with a moderate gear change.

My 68 is a 289 but is much improved over stock (engine and suspension)...
The 68 is the car to be in if you love being looked at and enjoy discussions about the car in every parking lot and gas station at which you stop. It draws smiles from 8 year olds and 80 year olds. Middle aged men's lower jaws drop mid-conversation and point as you drive by.
The Bullitt is the choice for the pure enjoyment of the driving experience.
Thus, it's hard to choose between the two. The classic gives joy to the many while the Bullitt gives joy to the few.

I have a Bullitt and an 68 Cougar XR7-GT with 390-4V, automatic transmission and 2.73(?) rear axle. The Bullitt is faster and handles MUCH better, and is all around more fun to drive. I love the Cougar, but am seriously considering replacing the suspension with Bullitt components, and I know, the rear axle ratio has got to change.

68DARKHORSE,

Really nice looking '68.

Could'nt agree with you more on the Cleveland motors. My uncle had Sig Erson, Sig and Babe were friends of his in Calif, grind me a cam for my '71 351C back in 1984. With roller rockers, quench heads and a 650 Holley this was one really sweet ride. As usual, I wish I had'nt "given" the car away in '89.

Today I saw an Aussie Ford Falcon like Mad Max's. It was Calipso Coral or something close. It had 4.9 on the fender. Does anyone know if they put destroked Clevelands in these cars? This car had Cleveland heads and t-stat came out of block not intake like 302. It was a very cool car, and 295-50-15's fit inside the quarter panels.

The Aussie 302C is exactly that - a destroked 351C.

I still have a couple of 4-barrel head 351Cs laying around on the shelf. Used to run one in a '70 Cougar, ran low 12s; could have probably gotten 11s with more time fine tuning the combo. My brother refreshened this engine about a year ago and is now running it in a '70 Fairlane on the street (yes, it's fun but the exhaust note scares off most potential challengers). Not much to speak of for mods, just a very healthy solid cam (old Ford Motorsport) with corresponding valvetrain, forged flat-tops, Torker intake and a Holley and a good ignition. The key to really making one work is cam selection, gearing, and converter. The parts are still out there but you have to look a little harder.

Not fair to compare our Bullitt to our '68 as the '68 only has a 289/3 sp manual in it. I have a relative who owns a '68 390/4 sp fastback (DHG too) and it goes like a bat outta h***. Not sure how it would compare to the new Bullitt though.

I can tell you that the Bullitt I have now would beat the '71 Z28 I had 30 years ago.

Funny, in a parking lot, the '68 we have now draws much more attention than the Bullitt does. I guess it is more of a rarity and most people don't even know the new one is a Bullitt.

I don't have a '68, but I have a couple '65's. I'd have to agree with the consensus, that a) you can't compare them b) the classics draw more looks, and c) the Bullitt outperforms an outdrives the classics in every regard. Still, I've been driving my '65 289 every day this week. I love them both!!!

I'd give my right n..ehe..he..he..heh.. To add a 68 Fastback to my garage! Man are those cars sexy looking! It's difficult to find them these days, so far out of all my searches, I've found the nicest 68's out of California completely stock and with original paint. I envy the owner of a Bullitt and a 68 fastback! That is the best combo for the garage!

A six of Miller Lite!
