My specialty before I retired was accident investigation/re-construction. Carrying a camera is a smart idea, all of our Company vehicles have one in the glove box along with a form for collecting names and license numbers of all involved vehicles as well as witnesses plate numbers, names, etc.

Don't count on the police to provide a report that will protect you in the civil courts. They will document the accident from the criminal conduct point of view, but most likely will not provide the information you will need to protect yourself in the civil court arena.

Ask your insurance carrier for advise on what information they will need to provide the maximum protection for you, but always remember......It's your wallet that the other party will be after, especially if your coverage is minimal and you have assets to go after.

Hah... In Chicago proper they don't send cops out for accidents with no injuries, car break-ins, vandalism, petty theft, etc. They now require all parties to either phone in or go to the station themselves. I was involved in an accident a while back and an undercover cop (driving a Caprice with IL green text "M-plates") was a few cars behind me... He saw the whole thing and basically told me he's not sticking around but to lie to the police at the station--they'll never investigate. It's always your word vs. the other guy's here.

So, this is what the whole world has come to.

It's a great idea, Karl...too bad it's necessary though.

Guess I'll run out and buy a disposable camera too!

I'm afraid I agree. In most large cities, today's law enforcement organizations simply do not have the personnel to handle non-injury traffic collisions, or other crimes that do not involve life-threatening situations. In fact, in some cities, if you leave the vehicles in the roadway after a collision, and they are both operational, the responding officer may cite you for impeding the flow of traffic. That's why a camera is a great tool to have on hand. Quickly photograph the scene, street signs, note overall traffic conditions, weather, etc and then get out of the roadway before you get hit again........

I always have a digital cam with me. I also have a disposable camera in the glove boxes of my car and the wifes car. When and if you ever get into an accident burn the whole roll up. Get pictures of everything from every angle. Also surreptitiously snap pics of ALL the occupants of both vehicles. I've had co-workers involved in accidents in Chicago where this little practice saved him a great deal of trouble. He slid through an intersection on ice and barely clipped the end of another car. He got pictures of the single occupant of the other car and the entire scene around. Only about 3 other people were there. When they went to court there were suddenly 4 other passengers in the other car.. All of them claiming neck and back injuries. The additional people were NOT in the photographs so the entire claim was dismissed. It can only help to protect you and doesn't cost much money.
