Okay, I'm not only old, but Old-School also.

On my 05 and 07 GT, I put in the Hurst Shifter. Loved it in both. Now comes the Question, How do I save my knuckles when slamming third, but keep the look of the Bullitt in tact? Hurst is out of the Question for this baby. Has anyone done the MGW shifter? And if so, can it accomodate the Bullitt Knob and Sleeve.
As smooth as it is, third and fifth are just too far away, for the type of shifting I like to do. The MGW looks to be the best fit I can find, and I like the fact that the springs and stops are adjustable.

Sooooo, any thought's out there. I really am not ready to talk to George at MGW yet, as I'd like some personal feedback from other's here on the subject. Especially as to just how much modifing will be required to do such a venture.

I will give you a hint of what I have done on my Mach1, although not the Bullitt in actual shifter geometry and how it functions, since the Mach1 is mounted to the Transmission directly and the Bullitt has external rails going up to the tranny, it still may give you some insight.

I used the Pro 5.0 and mounted up a Hurst stick that I had shortened and redrilled the mounting holes at an angle so the shifter was positioned like I preferred. I could have used the factory shift lever stick also but I wanted the real old school look, a place to mount my Hurst Roll Control and the solid feel the Pro 5.0 provided by the positive stop bolts. The Hurst for the Mach1 still had the stop bolts for the Mach1 but to me the quality wasn’t as good as the Pro 5.0.

The newer ‘05 and up Mustang Hurst Shifters do not have the stop bolts so if you want that feel then I do suggest the Pro 5.0 and more than likely you could use the stock shifter with it. The throw will be shorter than the stock unit with the Pro 5.0 so the end result will be the travel towards the dash will be less. But on the other hand, you may have to modify another stick lever to get exactly what you want for your reach like I did. You could not do that with the Shifter lever on the MGW but it does have multiple positions you can use to get a position that you may be happy with.

I like the '08 shifter actually, for me it is very smooth.

You can use the Hurst. Hurst has a lever that used the stock knob. You don't have to use the chrome Hurst lever. The Hurst you get from FRPP comes with both levers.

I've already disassembled the console, down to the floor. And to me anyway, it appears different from my 05 and 07 GT's. ie, less room. Meaning, modding may have to be done. I was actually surprised how easy the Hurst install was. It does not look as though it would be the same process with the Bullitt. I'm a TMS member also, and have been scouring those archives, but NONE address the BULLIT persee.

Also, I had an 03 Mach1 also, and was ready to go with the Pro 5.0, but I just couldn't handle the Torch Red Color any longer, so decided against any major upgrades. (Did luv that Clutch though).

Sooooooooo, more research. 5.0 vs MGW. Please keep us up on your install, and especially what your doing about the final "look" as well as feel. thx.

Try this link for a discussion of a couple Bullittheads that installed the MGW Shifter.

Sounds like you can use the Bullitt shifter knob if you order the correct one.

Note that pages 3 & 4 appear to have the installation information you may be looking for.

Dave,
Well, you know my opinion...MGW FTMFW.......But, I still do not believe either shifter handle from MGW will accomodate the stock bullitt shift knob. I could be wrong, but....I don't know....

There is no question the MGW can be used in the Bullitt, if you do not mind changing the shift knob.....It is the best shifter, bar none....

Oh, and yes, Taco Bill is renouned for his how to threads....His MGW instructions were used by MGW, and inclusive with their shifters. I had one of the first Beta shifters when George finally perfected these, and it is still impecable....after three years....

Don't bother ordering the adjustable shift stops. Totally unnecessary......

Here is a pic of the shift stops on my install....

Shifter tunnel, with dynamat installed, with new shifter going in....

I have the FRPP/Hurst in mine, with the stock shifter knob.. Once it loosened up a bit, it works great. 2nd to 3rd much improved, and all the rest are better also. IMO, a worthwhile addition that should have been there when I bought the car..
