Okay, here's the story...cold notchy difficult to engage 1-2 shift when cold (no grinding). I tried Redline D4 (twice) with no improvement. Then as a result of input from Cobra drivers I tried <gulp> GM Synchromesh and presto...buttery smooth shifts! Give it a try it might just save your transmission from going under the "knife".

I believe Tremec specs GM Synchromesh for the TKO 5-speed. Sounds like it works well in the 3650 (does Tremec spec Synchromesh for all its transmissions?).

Anyone done dyno testing with Redline vs. Synchromesh vs. Amsoil, etc.?

how many quarts did you use? and where is the tranny fill plug? I think I found it back around above the crossmember area. Anybody with the answer reply.

GM Synchromesh part #12345349. Fill plug is above drain plug on passengers side. With vehicle level, it took about 4 1/3 qts. You can find at any GM dealer at a little over $9.00 a quart. Will need pump to pump fluid up into fill hole. You can purchase at Autozone, Advance auto or PepBoys.

Why not email them and ask them what differentiates their product from Mobil 1, Redline, and Synchromesh for the 3650 application?

Got my car back with the GM syncromesh but I've only driven it a couple of miles. Big improvement in 1-2 shift. Now just a snicket when before there was a grind if I shifted too quickly. All other shifts are like everyone else said, buttery smooth. Shifted flawlessly 1-2 after only a couple of minutes. Before it took about 10 minutes until the crunch went away. Basically the problem is solved.

At the Mobil station by where I work. They picked up 5 quarts of GM syncromesh from Cauley Chevrolet. The shifts are so much smoother I also recommend everyone switch.

I wonder what are the odds of Ford switching to GM Synchromesh from the factory? Before you laugh, it would certainly cost Ford less money in the long run...

Again, I'm having good luck with Redline D4 ATF (better, but not perfect), but I might try Synchromesh as that appears to be what Tremec specs (and perhaps used when designing the transmission).

My 2002 GT Owner's Manual says that my T3650 tranny is filled with Synthetic Mercon ATF. Slight notchy 1-2 shift only for two or three minutes when the car is cold and temps outside are in the 20s. I can live with it for now, but if it starts to bug me, I'll go with the GM Syncromesh.

Maybe they did switch to Synchromesh . "Synthetic Mercon ATF" is a spec (not a brand), so it could be any synthetic ATF that meets Mercon specs...

I sent Tremec an email yesterday about using GM Synchromesh fluid and here’s the reply:

Henry,
The GM synchromesh fluid will not damage the seals or other components. The oil from the factory is Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, Texaco offers a non -synthetic Dexron III spec. ATF that you may also want to consider. Avoid any magic additives or snake oils , they can do more harm than good. I hope this has been useful.

Subject: Best fluid for TR-3650

I have a 2001 Mustang GT Bullitt with the TR-3650 transmission. Many people with this car and tranny are switching to GM synchromesh ATF part No. 12345349 as it seems to be better than the Mobil 1 ATF recommended by Ford. Will the GM synchromesh damage the seals or any other part of the transmission?

Thanks,
Henry Blattel
