When Ford replaced your motor, did they use the heads off of your old engine? If they did, this will almost confirm that the heads are the cause of the death rattle. I made the call of the noise being in the heads the first time I heard the noise. If it was piston slap due to piston design, all 2001's would make the noise. I read on a thread here that someone had their driver side head replaced and noise went away and car ran like a raped date. My Pops completely ruled out piston slap/detonation as the cause of this noise. His word is good enough for me because he does know his stuff. I have an appointment for thursday and I'll let you guys know how it goes. Late.

I got a "complete" crate engine. It is complete all the way to new sensors. Basically the only thing THAT WAS SWAPPED was my injectors and front accessories.

The repair order also simply states "R & R new engine ASS. from Ford."

They "simply" dunk the motor, bolt up acessories, plug in sensors, bolt up tranny & clutch and fire it up.

It even came pre filled with oil and factory installed FL-820-S.

I, too, had the idea that whatever was left over was the cause of the noise; this leaves me with the injectors and fuel rail.

Well i was the one who had his drivers side head replaced but my ticking noise was not the cold death rattle, it was a constant tick that never went away. I too have the 3k cold rattle for 10 mins or so that goes away but the incessant ticking that i used to have that never went away is now fixed with the head replaced. The car is tight now and I have no complaints at all.

Damn ! I thought I was on to something here. I take my GT in Thursday morning and I am taking the tech for a ride. I want his initial reaction to the noise. Well see.

Escro,

I too have constant ticking,
Can you describe it and what was replaced to fix it?

I am taking mine in on thursday night and leaving it overnight, for the 1-2 shift issue. I will have the tick checked out too. And the squealing brakes, AND they already ordered the headlights and door lock pins to install.
I'M SO EXCITED!!!

It was an obnoxious ticking noise that could be heard inside the ricepit and would get louder as the rpms went up. I had 3 different dealers look at it and the 3rd one diagnosed it as a factory flaw in the head and said it was an oiling problem with that head. He replaced it and it sounds perfect now. It was not a rattle and it went tick tick tick tick tick and never went away. Its quite possible if there was a flaw in my head that there were flaws in others too. Good luck on the fix, because it made the car sound like total ass and it was embarassing to drive it.
