Sounds like you raced an older (E36, 240 HP) M3, probably modded if it was close. The latest M3 (E46, 333HP) will show a stock Bullitt their tail lights.
Although the MSRP on an M3 is $45,900 they are getting closer to $70,000 for them as they are in short supply. The interior, seats, etc., is very sweet, as is the handling and daily driveability. As for looks and exhaust sound, I prefer the Bullitt and the C5 (LS1). I've been looking at used C5's for a 2nd car (Bullitt is daily driver, stock). The C5 stock does 0-60 in around 5 (my '99 did 5 flat (G-tech Pro), gentle launch). With a few mods, you're right there with an M3 (4.7, 4.

. Used C5's are going for around $30K.
The least expensive stock sports car that can beat the M3 is the Z06 (some of the last F-bodies might squeak by too).
You may never see an M3 at the drag strip, but you'll see quite a few at autocrosses and road race tracks (which is their real strength).
