Hi all

I am new to the forum and found this site while searching the web.

A friend of mine is building a 68 Bullitt clone but we are having a hard time to find information about the side mirror used on Steve McQueen's Mustang.

Some sources says it is a mirror taken from a 65/66 Mustang but it doesn't look the same at all. The one used on Chad's clone in the other hand looks like a perfect match.

Does anyone know where it could come from?

Thank you.

Try the source. I will check with Dave Kunz to see if he has any idea.
That would be great if you could contact him. Thank you Droopy.

Good morning Thierry,
On Google : "How to "Bullitt" your Mustang by Dave Kunz"
You will find a lot of info.
Cheers,
Dan
Thank you DanR, I did find a lot of info but nothing about the mirror. :frown:

No kidding? I learn something new every day on here, I guess thats why I show up... well, that and a few thousand others.

Seriously, I didn't know this one. I'll have to help key an eye out for them on ebay.

Is it my tired eyes, or are the mirrors in those first two images not the same? The second one kinda looks like an old 541S Jensen mirror from the 60's, painted, but its hard to tell. The clone with Chad and the first pic look the same to me though.

[edit] I looked again. I think the window is playing tricks with my eyes. Ignore my comment on the Jensen 451s. Time for bed. :)

Check out the Falcon rear view mirrors on this ebay posting. Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1964-Ford-Falcon-Futura-2dr-Sedan-260-V8-2nd-Owner-/150525817659?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item230c09b33b

I think the 68 Bullitt movie car may have had an earlier Falcon mirror. It's not exactly the same as the Falcon mirrors that are on this listed car, but similar mirrors were fairly common at the auto parts stores at the time of filming. I one similar mirror on my 62 Fairlane. It was different, but very similar. I have looked for a photo of it, but have found no remaining photos showing my mirror other than this one.:rightie:
Like I said, similar not identical. I bought it at the local auto parts store, my first "big repair" on my first car.  Just my opinion, but I believe that they bought a round mirror at the local parts store. Generic, not car or model specific.

See mirror "B" in the attached link. It's like the mirror I hung on a 59 Rambler (paid $40 for that car) that I owned after the Fairlane. Also bought at the local parts store. Before 64 the manufacturers only put rear view mirrors on cars that were top of the line. It was another piece of chrome. Lower level models didn't get the mirrors unless the owner bought and installed them.

BTW, I understand that Steve took the original equipment mirror off the Mustang to install this little round mirror. He, imo, didn't want that large mirror sticking up blocking the camera's view of the cars operator.

From Dave Kunz: Probably a cheap mirror from a parts store. His concern was the visibility. There are some horrible blind spots on a 68 fastback and a mirror of that type heightens them.
Perhaps Steve was practicing some Italian driving?

My favorite line from that movie. :)

Don't get me started with Dave Kunz....We went to the Chad McQueen parade event in Hollywood....Kim and I were standing in front of the registration table waiting our turn and Dave walks right up and says" Hi, I'm Dave Kunz....." I looked at Kim and she says out loud "Guess we were just standing here for nothing...." Dave just looked over and continued talking to the Jules Verne people.....Typical Hollywood reporter ego.....He seems to be that way when I've seen him at Boys Republic or at Knott's Berry Farm Ford Show.....

Greg: He was fine at 06 Nationals....Very informative and nice.....But that was four years ago.....At this event, Kim and I were at the front of the line and he just came up and basically cut in front of us......There were people standing behind us.....Now that just rude what he did...
