Have a 1998.5 Contour SVT with 132k on it....Sits outside with a car cover...When I start it in the morning (4:15 am), it won't hold idle...All I do is put the key in and put the clutch in...Grant it all I do is go through four stops signs and then I'm on the freeway...Had a local shop look at it and they thought its was MAF sensor dirty up by the K and N air filter...So they cleaned it up and I put in a regular air filter...Still have the same problem...Looked up this problem in www.contour.org and came up with either the IAC(Idle adjust control)or EGR valve...Shop says it can't be EGR valve and IAC would be bad if it wouldn't hold it idle at all, cold or warm...It does hold idle when warm.....Any thoughts????????

Why not EGR? Sounds reasonable. Is the IAC valve sticking when cold? Is the MAF voltage reading correctly? (I ask this because I have seen one case where a K&N filter that was overlubed got a touch of oil on the MAF wire and was not able to be cleaned causing a bad reading.) I would suggest a second opinion. You may find it easier on the shop if it is left for a few days, to allow for a cold condition to replicate it.

I was having the same problem, but turns out the "CAI" tube had wiggled itself loose from the coupler and TB. It was just kind of hanging there. Tightened it all back up, and no issues now.

Marc: Tried this....Left at the shop on a Thursday, they kept it until this pass Tuesday, couldn't duplicate the problem...I drove it home Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, no idle....Brought it back to the shop Wednesday afternoon and they left it outside that night and Thursday night...No luck....They claimed a code on the MAF, hence the bad reading and cleaning of that part.....Went back to www. contour.org site and they agree with you....Might just buy an IAC and an EGR valve and replace...The shop keeps saying don't want to do any unnecessary repairs but I'm a little upset because this problem has been going on since October....

With those miles, I can't see how an EGR valve replacement would be unnecessary. More like preventative. Even though they are not designed to fail, just the way they work means that sometime it's going to go bad. Not if but when.

As for the IAC, Maybe needs a cleaning?

I hate to say it, but a cold start problem is hard to pin down for any shop. If you would like, I can talk to my shop boss and pick his brain. I have already found him to be a wealth of knowledge.

Marc: If you don't mind, run it by your shop boss....I read on the other site that if you buy an IAC, you gotta buy a Ford product, all after market quality is spotty...I agree with your statement about the EGR valve....It would be prevention rather than unnecessary .....

For the IAC, EGR, and a few other things, I would say only use Ford stuff. MAF, and other "software programable" (in other words- things that can be changed by computer programming for performance, not straight driveability like the IAC) can be aftermarket, sometimes even better then Ford.

I will talk to Bob in the morning, but when I drove by earlier, I saw 7 new trucks in the graveyard, where they get towed into. Looks like a really busy Monday ahaid of us. So I may not be able to post back until tomorrow night.

Bob said probably not IAC. If it was, it should do it regardless of temp. EGR is possible, so I might just start there. I would hate for you to change it out and it not be the problem, though....

Marc: Thanks for checking on this......Its been very warm here in So California , so no problem today.....When it starts acting up, the EGR valve will be the first to be replaced......

Idle Adjust Control is a 'known' problem with these I had the same thing happen on my old Mondeo (same car in the UK) - cost me $50 to fix at the Ford dealer.

Mine would mostly do it when cold, but only occasionally when warmed-up.

Hey, you got the decimal in the wrong spot! It was more like 8.0 degrees here today, and kinda like 5.0 tonight!

Well Marc, had Vista Ford in Oxnard look at my Contour last week....Had five problems:Faulty MAF sensor, Miss fire at #1 Cylinder due to cracked spark plug,Bank 1 Cat is bad, All spark plugs have exessive gap and fuel level sending unit reading erratically.......No wonder it wouldn't hold idle and that the problem was random...All fixed at a cost of 2,121.....The cat was a Ford only part and cost 717.00 alone.....Fuel pump was 351.12...Rebuilt MAF sensor cost 210.68.... The rest was labor.....

Update on this problem.....Got the car back and in less than three days the check engine lite came on and at cold idle the car kept searching for idle ,meaning it would climb up to 2k then drop idle to almost dying then go back up......Took the car back on Monday April 27 to the dealer, they gave me a rental...Kept the car all week and cleaned the throtle body and replaced upper intake gasket and EGR gasket....353.00 later, got the car back on Friday May 1st...So after paying almost 2500, I hope the problem is fixed..............................
