Video details air strike on hiding insurgents

You can run and drive, but you can’t hide — that’s the lesson from the video of March 2 air strike in Iraq released by U.S. Central Command on Wednesday.

The video was compiled from reconnaissance footage shot by an unidentified aircraft. The video appears to have been shot by an unmanned aerial vehicle, possibly an MQ-1 Predator, on patrol somewhere northwest of Baghdad between Taji and Fallujah.

The video opens with al-Qaida gunmen firing an anti-aircraft machine gun mounted in the back of a truck at an unseen target. The insurgents are apparently unaware they are being photographed and pictures transmitted to a command and control center.

U.S. commanders believe truck-mounted guns have been used to set fast-moving traps for helicopters flying over the region.

Next, the gunmen speed off down a rural road. The heat of the gun barrels glows in the infrared camera image.

The gunmen hide the gun truck behind a row of trees and then run off along a road and into a field. They try to hide in a tree line.

At that point, an aircraft, most likely an A-10, is cleared to fire on the insurgents. The ground around the al-Qaida gunmen explodes as cannon rounds strike.

Then, attention turns to the hidden gun truck. A single shot explodes the gun truck. While a press release from Multi-National Force—Iraq doesn’t identify the plane that attacked the hidden truck, a summary of air strikes from Central Air Forces credits two aircraft with strikes on parked vehicles: an MQ-1 with firing a Hellfire missile and destroying a gun truck and an F-16 dropping laser-guided 500-pound bombs.

At least they can see the targets not like during the Viet Nam war where we bombed lots of trees and crossroads not knowing if anything was there or not. Too cool.
