I installed Denso Iridium plugs last weekend and wanted to share the results with you. The only difference between runs were the plugs.

The runs were back to back with the time between runs being as long as it took to change the plugs(appx 40 minutes). The car was not unstrapped from the dyno during this time. The battery was disconnected between the runs.

2001 Mustang Bullitt
Vortech S-trim
Anderson Ford Motorsport Powerpipe
Bassani X-pipe w/cats
Stock Motorcraft platinum plugs
RWHP=314.7SAE
RWTQ=337.1SAE

2001 Mustang Bullitt
Vortech S-trim
Anderson Ford Motorsport Powerpipe
Bassani X-pipe w/cats
Denso Iridium plugs(IT20, gapped at .038)
RWHP=322.4SAE
RWTQ=344.4SAE

What this doesn't tell is that the gains are across the entire rpm range. Gains were at least 4rwhp from 3K on up. The A/F leaned out around a point or more with the Denso plugs as well. They appear to be a quality plug and if the gains are representative they are worth the price.

That's great #'s from the plug swap.I wonder if you would see similar gains with out the supercharger.

Nice gains from just plugs. Thanks for testing them and posting the results. NOW... how much? And a good source? Thanks I'm having a SC installed.

Also...
Since you disconnected the battery you reset the brain and then it was not driven for it to adjust to its own engine components.
Had the brain been reset before the first run then the new plugs may have even showed a greater difference from before and after.

Very cool, I may have to get me some of those. I assume you left them in? How did the old plugs look? If I remember, yours was running pretty rich. I wonder what the results would have been with NEW stock plugs and the iridiums? Did you get any input from Vortech in regards to using the Iridiums? Sorry about all the questions but I don't want to burn a hole in the top of a piston.

Ray,
I got them directly from the Denso rep(Mark Brown). I think they are around $10 or $12 each.

Mid life,
You could be right. I am sure it will be on the dyno again sometime soon.

Jay,
Upon removal they looked fine. I did not talk to Vortech about them, but I need to call them this week about something else so I will ask their opinion on them then.

Reader,
The old plugs were about 2300 miles old, they were the originals.

I did before and after dyno testing naturally aspirated with the NGK iridiums. I'll post the results in a day or so.

I am the DENSO rep that Tim refers to...to answer your question: A naturally aspirated Bullitt will see 3-4 HP increase with the DENSO Iridium Power Plugs.

Get 'em and ENJOY!

Tim: Thank you for all of your help...your specific dyno results will be posted on www.iridiumpower.com soon.

How do I get my hands on some. I live in SoCal also and the Denso site says the nearest dist. is in Alhambra. I want to grab some today since I already have my plugs out. Also, how did Tim come up with the IT20's gapped at .038 when the app. guide online say that the GT takes IT16's gapped at .050? Thanks for the help!

why in the world would you install the blower and retain the stock plugs?? :???:

I'm not knocking the densos, just trying to say there were other alternatives before the densos came around. Like NGK or Champion.

And btw...what did you have the stock plugs gapped at?? Where they .038 as well?

Not sure where you get that from since Denso INVENTED the Iridium Plug, whereas NGK has only begun to offer them relatively recently.

on a blown app, you're going to want a smaller gap to help curb spark blowout. This is the reason alot of blown apps will add an aftermarket ignition as well (ie..MSD)

I never ran an aftermarket ignition because of the high rate of failure of the MSD's. I just used the stock ignition and gapped my plugs (Champion) at .032. Probably didn't achieve the most power by doing this (using the aftermarket ign and spreading the gap would have realized more), but I wasn't too concerned since I was making 450rwhp on a stock 9.85 to 1 Cobra 32V. Plus, I never got stranded by a failed ignition.

Tim, thanks. Huh, a new toy, oops, I mean mod. They say that copying is the highest from of flattery. I'm looking into Denso Power Plugs. Very interested in what Vortech says in relation to SCs. Mike

no need to get testy, I was merely stating that there were much better alternatives to the STOCK plugs at the time of his install.

I have no opinion on the Densos because I've never used them. If he's happy, then great. I was just surprised he didn't junk the stockers at the time of install.

Well there is also European Motor Works in Hawthorne which is straight up the 405 from you....it's 30 miles but not too much hassle...call first to check stock.

Otherwise order them online and Monarch will ship overnite.

Not testy...just clearing up inaccuracies...

JB,
The stockers were also gapped at .038. There was no particular reason I kept the stockers in there other than they were working fine. I am not running high boost(8psi) and they were brand new(the car only had 15 miles on it at the time of the blower install).

As for being pleased, yes I am. Where else can you pick up 8hp for around $100. Not a bad $/hp ratio in my book.

Thanks for all your support Mark.
