Well, I finally made to the dyno with the water injection and a smaller pulley.

Once there Tery(the dyno operator) swapped out the stock 3.6 inch pulley for a new 3.33 inch one. The first run showed the same FP problem I had before, but we forged on. The car made 10psi at 6K and had hp and tq gains across the graph. You can see exactly where the water injection kicked in too(kinda cool). It was set to come on at 5psi and suprisingly it did.

The pulley alone was good for around 15rwhp uncorrected and the water injection made gains of between 10 and 17 rwhp from 4600-6000. This was with water only, no alcohol this time. I think with a little more playing around there may be more power in there. BTW, the water injection made no difference in A/F ratio at all. The gains appeared to be entirely from the cooling affect.

It was a good day.

Sounds like a good day Tim. What other changes, if any, did you have to make when you went with a smaller pulley?

And one other question about your Powerpipe. I just put one on mine and now I have an idle problem. Sometimes it even dies when I come to a stop. Did you ever have that problem? I'm guessing it has to do with the bypassed air and the MAF? I installed a C&L 80mm MAF body that uses the stock MAF and it ran like total crap. Took it off ASAP after reading a bunch of posts from supercharged guys stating the same problem without a fix.
Was that water injection a pain to install? Sounds like it works pretty well.

Jay,
The first change was just the pulley change, no tuning or anything. I just wanted to be on the dyno to check my A/F so I knew it would be safe. 2 extra psi and hardy changed my A/F at all(less than .3). $70 well spent.

As for a rough idle, both my Vortech'd cars caused somewhat of a rough idle...at times. It doesn't happen all the time though. And I haven't seen any consistency to the situation when it occurs yet.

The Water injection was pretty simple to install. I got the Spearco unit that uses a resevoir that happen to fit under the panel that covers the space between the radaitor and bumber. All wiring/vacuum/water lines were able to be kept right there. All you see is the resevoir fill cap through the plastic cover and the water line going to the discharge tube.

Water-alcohol injection has been around since before World War II. It was used with very good results in many of the V-12 powered fighters of that era. I never heard of it being used in the air-cooled radial engines. It was good for short bursts or one longer burst of increased HP hence speed.

The intent of water injection is basically to cool the air entering your intake. Cooler air=denser air. When adding some sort of boost you inherently heat the air. Typically air-to-air or air-to-water intercoolers are used, but they are cost prohibitive. Anywhere from $1000-1500, where as water injection runs around $300-500. Water injection does not effect the air to the same degree as intercooling, but it has one potential the intercoolers don't. You can mix the water with denatured alcohol and effectively increase the octane being burned.

I don't have any pics of it. The parts are few though. There is a tank(.4 gallons) that fit under the panel that covers the space between the radiator and bumper. Attached to the tank is high pressure pump(160psi) that is about the size of "D" cell battery. There is also a pressure switch that turns on the pump only after the set pressure is seen. Then there is a water line that runs to the discharge tube from teh blower. I'll try to take some pics this weekend.

Tim,

Great gains dude. Glad to see you finally got it set up.

So you got 15rwhp from the pully huh? 3.33?

Sounds like my next mod. What about balancing and weight? I've heard guys leaving the stock one on for the weight and balance? Or was it a straight R&R?
