I know the topic has been covered to death but.....

I've decided I'd like to change the exhaust for some added power/torque. However, I don't want to change the whole exhaust. I want to keep the car as close to stock as possible with the only mods being things that I can undo if I want in the future. That said, is adding an X or H pipe a simple bolt in mod? Will I have to change or cut the existing pipes?

One last thing, after reading lots of posts about brands I think I'll go with Bassini. Anyone have any opinions on my choice? X or H hasn't been decided yet.

Replacing the stock H with an aftermarket H or X is a bolt in operation, but not exactly simple the first time. Took me several hours with the tools I have (hand tools, no air) and jacks and jack stands. Some people say its a fifteen minute job...I'm guessing with proper tools and a lift.
Bassani X is a good pick for power. So are BBK and Magnaflow X's. The MAC Prochamber is also a good choice. X's will make the tone of your exhaust higher pitched...more like an exotic racecar.
I went with the highflow, 2-cat MAC "H" because I wanted to retain the deep musclecar grumble and I want to have no problems come emissions time.
I also went with weld-in MAC stainless steel FlowPath mufflers. The car sounds mean and awesome. Best sounding mustang I've ever heard.
If I want to go back to stock it's a matter of switching out the H's and having the exhaust shop weld back in the stock muffs ($40).
No big deal.

The Bassani really was about a 30 minute job. Just make sure you have a swivel joint for your socket set. The BBK I had before took alot longer and I never did get the exhaust leak fixed at the drivers side exhaust manifold. That's why I ditched it in favor of the Bassani. Stay far away from BBK if you want an X pipe that fits well. The Bassani comes in 3 pieces and makes it easier to install and adjust. Of course the Bassani cost more, but you know what they say, you get what you pay for. Besides, the Cobra R comes stock with a Bassani X-pipe, that should tell you something.

Bassani quality is top notch. Magnaflow is another one to consider. Back-to-back dyno's showed more of a gain with magnaflow X-pipe. If magnaflow's X-pipe is the same quality as their mufflers it should be high quality.

I went from Bassani X to BBK LT's and Shortie H. LT's are great quality, Shorty H is marginal and needed a lot of elbow grease to fit.

Bassani X pipe, cat free, was a 45 minute breeze on a hoist with gawkers in the way.A perfect fit and not one problem. You get what you pay for and this is a beautiful piece of stainless that Bassani did their homework on.The sound with the Bullitt mufflers is on the loud side, but Im very content with it.Removing 4 cats from any exhaust system will free up some horses.Of course MIL eliminators are needed to plug in rear ox sensors,so there is another $50 but thats the price to pay for an easy power gain.Every one has their favorite way to do this mod,Im sure happy with mine. Enjoy !!

Thanks everyone for your help with this. I think I'll actually go with the Bassani 2-cat H-pipe setup. I don't want the car to be overly loud which is what it seems to be the case with the X-pipe.

Two last questions.

A) there was a noticeable performance increase by making the switch?

B) where's the best price?

Thanks again everyone.

I've got a question for everyone. There's lots of talk about X and H pipes, so why doesn't anyone just use a straight dual exhaust anymore? Wouldn't the X/H pipe design cause turbulance whereas a straight dual exhaust design wouldn't? Just wondering.

The theory behind the H and X pipe is that it syncronizes the exhaust pulses and scavenges the exhaust quicker and more efficiently than straight pipes, creating more power.

BASSANI doesn't make an "H"

If you want a catt-ed highflow "H" you're left with only two options...the MAC and SHM (Sean Hyland Motorsports). SHM can make one for you, though it may be months before you get it and it may not fit too well, it will be 100% stainless (except the cats). The MAC will be on your doorstep in three days.

I haven't dynoed my car and don't plan on doing it (don't care about exact numbers as long as I'm smiling behind the wheel) but it FEELS more powerful with my exhaust mods...torquier. Could just be the awesome sound though.

I was speaking to Scott at Sean Hyland a couple of weeks ago and they have their own in-house made H-pipes made from quality 409 stainless steel, both with or without cats.

Our Bullitt/GT-specific part #22001 sells for $475 CANADIAN, while the Cat H #22001C goes for $635 CANADIAN.

You can call them at (519)421-2291 to inquire on availability and U.S.$ pricing and shipping.

Good luck.
