In Ohio we have had a rash of officers being hit by drunk drivers, one of which was killed. Most of these have happened in/around Columbus but last night it hit close to home. Two deputies were on a DUI stop making an arrest when a drunk driver came along, hit one of the deputies, and then rolled him between the truck and his cruiser causing some leg damage. He had some reconstructive surgery on his knee but should be okay. As for the drunk driver, he left the area and was later found by another deputy and arrested. I feel bad when it happens to any other fellow law enforcement oficer, but this one is tougher. I just had this deputy in the training academy last year.
In Ohio its now a law, but for everyone else, when you see a cruiser on a stop on the side of the road please try to move over to give them some room to do their job.

How ironic!! On a DUI stop and gets struck by another DUI... I have a good friend on the local Metro DUI squad and he is racking up the arrests! Go Barry!! My support and appreciation goes out to all of you.

I always move over Cam. I know how unsafe
it is for you when you pull people over.
What I can't figure out is why the Cincinnati
police pull people over where there is NO
shoulder on the road...why do they do this?
Seems very unsafe for everybody. I have
almost rearended "over the rise" police stops
several times! I don't see the flashing
lights until it's almost too late. No offense
here.

Sorry to hear this Cam. I have ZERO tolerance for Drunk Drivers. I have my own reasons for this! But I understand how you feel.

I for one always volunteer to drive when any one wants to go out and drink...

Take care.

Collin, who knows why they pull cars over in unsafe areas? It's all part of officer safety strategy not to do this. Do not pull anyone over in a blind location unless you absolutely have to. As a park ranger, I was taught to know my "turf" and not to hit the lights until I was ready to make the stop. Too many people panic and swerve over and stop right then, yet others are totally oblivious to the fact that you are behind them. A trooper here in TN was killed during an mva investigation. He was set up around a blind corner and a local deputy was posted back up the road to warn of the accident. The deputy was dispatched on another call, leaving the trooper "wide open." He was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler at only 28 yrs of age.

I am sorry to hear about these deaths and
injuries to our police officers as a result
of motor vehicle mishaps. Then they have to
worry about getting shot at! Hats off to all
police officers!

You're right Greg about waiting to make the stop. I've followed people for a short time before I stop them because of wanting to be in a well lighted area or out of the way of traffic. Of course they want to know why I waited so long to stop them and I tell them it's my discretion(?) as to when I stop them. Most understand but some still want to be a$$es.

Hey Cam, have you had any close calls with a vehicle hitting you during a stop? How about close calls with the wrong end of a gun?

I beg to differ I've had cops get p*ssed when I drove to a gas station when they turned on the overheads. I'd love to know what the blood alcohol level was. As you all know the federal government demands it be lowered to .08 rather than .1. I contend that most acciedents are caused by people that are well over the current level of .1. I know that law enforcement will bitch and moan that you need .08 but it won't solve the problem of DUI. It will just fill up the cours and the jails.

Even if only 1% were to not take that drink at the bar or at the friends house for dinner because of ZERO tollerence, it's worth the over crowded courts. Dang... Even if it only saves ONE life it's worth it! If you have not guessed, I have ZERO tollerence for drunk driving! I also understand that not everyone gets drunk and drives, but is it really that hard to just NOT DRINK AT ALL if your going to drive? That's why I volinteer to drive for any of my friends that want to drink. It is true that friends do not let friends drink and drive!!!

I also tell my 16 year old son and 15 year old daughter that I don't want them to drink, but if they do. CALL!!! I'll come get them no matter what time it is! We won't yell about it then, but will work it out the next day. First goal is to get them to understand that they should NEVER get behind the wheele of a car after drinking.

Off my soap box now ... and back to the Daytona 500 .

On Ft. Benning there is little to no sholder room. Barley enough for the car to get of the road on some roads, and most of are roads are one lane. While doing a traffic stop I was grazed by a side view mirror, talk about close.then twice after sept 11 while doing check point i was hit by mirrors again. People do need to pay more attn. I know when I am driving I always slow down and switch lanes when seeing traffic stops.

Knock on wood Collin but so far in five years the only time I was hit by another car I was inside the cruiser at a stop light. As for the gun, only been on my side of them so far and God willing it will stay that way.

As much as I hate watching my speed constantly, I have a lot of respect for the police. I still would be one if it wasn't for my other career aspirations. Whenever possible I pull over to the farther lane when it comes to passing a cop on the side...if not possible, I keep a keen eye out and slow down at least 10 mph lower than cruising speed. I have seen enough COPS videos on TV that I want to be extremely cautious.

Hats off to all police officers and law enforcement officers. If I had my way, I would pay officers the salaries of those in professional sports! They deserve it!

This is an emotional subject for me because it HIT a little closer to home than most. On July 15, 2000 @ 0210 AM I was struck by a drunk driver while on another stop. I was knocked about 50 feet away at around 70 mph. I flipped through the air wondering what was going on till I hit the ground. I wasn't sure if I was going to live or not so I called for help on the radio and layed there waiting.
Only by the Grace of GOD was I able to return to work 6 months later. I sued and this is what bought my BULLITT. I'm now one of the leading DWI officers in my county.

Crimecrusher, I forgot about that until I saw the pic!! I've been on a roll lately, out of the last three I've had since Christmas Eve, all but one have plead guilty to the DUI. Have a motion hearing on the other coming up but I think he'll plead to the DUI, just at a lower lever, under .217. He tested .226, which in OH, anything over .217 is an additional charge.
