Man, I was driving so freaking slow it was not funny, and the damn thing did not look that high and I got over six of its pointy headed brothers...but ol' number seven high centered my dang mud flap things behind my front tires. Just as I was comming down the back side rolling along, "cur chunk," and the damn things slap down hard and I am stuck on the bump. My only two choices were to go forward or backwards. I kinda like the way they look, but I almost wish our cars did not have them, same side molding with out the mud flaps or whatever it is would be just fine...they just hang down to low and its not like doing the scrape thing in a kustom or something, its thin ol fibercrap just waiting to get cracked someday. You can not tell its dinged up...its all on the bottom, but I know its all gashed up and it drives me nuts o rama.

Oh man, that sux merc50! I can only imagine your pain. I have been pretty paranoid about those rockers and have done a few 180s to avoid the bumps. Yours just got scraped though right? No cracks? Hope not.

Sorry! --thanks for the warning, unfortunately at your expense. I hadn't considered the Bullitt to be low enough to worry about such things, never gave a thought to the flaps hanging low. With 10k miles on the car I guess I've been lucky.

merc50, will you touch it up yourself or take it to the body shop? Man, you must have been going really slow over that speed bump to get hung up on it...on the plastic rocker! Glad to hear no cracks! Let us know what pans out on the fix.

OK, fellow Bullitheads. A little tip/trick from the 4WD, offroad crowd. Cross them at an angle, one wheel at a time, not squared up 2 by 2. Noah hasn't been around for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time.

TX is right....it helps if you go in on an angle. Or...take my approach, and speed up a little instead of slowing down. Kinda like ripping off a band-aid. You'll do more damage if you let the mud guard get caught on it.

I think I'll still do the 180 degree turn when I see these rocker hazards. Hope my scan holds up.

Buy three pair from your local dealer.

In twenty years you won't be able to replace them for $100.

Anyone know how much they are now? I've scraped mine a few times, and got them REALLY bad last night, so I was thinking of picking up a pair or two anyway.

You really can not see it so I am not going to do anything about it...I just know they will get nuked later so I will wait until they really need to be fixed...as for the angle issue, not much choice in holiday traffic with cars everywhere but to hit them straight on...normally I would have gone through the middle of the lot and avoided them all together but with St. Ripoff day and rush hour/after work traffic I had to go over the sorry things.

I also feel your pain. They added some new speed bumps at work. I cringed the first time I struck it - thought I had bumped the cats under there. Then once again. I still couldn't look. Ok, after the third time I got down to examine the damage. That's when I saw the mud flap. The bottom edge is now a bit black if you look closely. Only one speed bump is too tall, and to avoid it, I would have many more to fight with. I just slowly creep up and over. Even killed the motor tonight going over it. I will pick up some spares for the closet since my Bullitt is my daily driver. This isn't over yet...

Merc, whoever owns the parking lot will pay for the repair of the damage. Trust me on this one. Go talk to the owner.

And if they give you any trouble, talk to your insurance company about them fixing it and see if they'll go after the lot owner. As long as they don't hold the "incident" against your insurance rates, it's probably worth doing. (Usually they'll require you to pay your deductible, but you'll get it back when the property owner pays back your insurance company).

I had a similar problem in my "beater" '94 Cougar... With 95,000 miles, the car still had original shocks, struts, & springs. (I know I waited too long). In one lot, I noticed that they increased the speed bump size. So I hit it at ~5MPH. Front tires went over OK, back tires went over OK, then BAM as the mufflers or something back there hit the bottom. Two weeks later, I replaced the shocks/struts/springs. The irony was that if I had been going faster, I would've been fine...

I've had this problem, too. I lost a chip out of the corner of my right flap. Strangely enough, I've found I can avoid it by going slightly too fast over those speed bumps I know are problematic. The flaps are low enough to catch, but if you go fast enough, the flaps will be past the high point on the bump when the car begins to drop.

I don't guarantee this as a perfect solution, though. You could just as easily make the damage worse.

I have to second what TXBullitt wrote earlier. I build and sell parts for Import performance cars, and I have learned after driving enough of 'em that the angle aproach is the only way to go. By the way, how much is Ford asking for those ground effects? :smile:I wonder if I can make them fit my '68:)?

Have'nt had any speed bump issues yet, but did scrape the MFs doing a U-Turn. The road dropped of a bit and all I heard was a SCCCCRRRRAAATTTCCCCCCHHHHHHH. Had the car a week. Hell, I thought I completely tore out the underside of the car. When I got back home I investigated further and found that the MFs were scrapped on the bottom. Learned my lesson though. It appears that they are easily replaced.
