I just bought my first home and I'm already wanting to do upgrades! I thought I would start in the garage, since that the most important room!

Currently I have a standard attached 2 car garage with a single door. I would like to transform this area into a shop that is both comfortable and easy to work in. Can you give me ideas/suggestions for the following?

Insulation:
Just blown in for the attic?
How about the garage door?

Heat/Air:
Run a duct?

Epoxy the floor:
Is Epoxy what I'm looking for?
Is it oil proof?
Easy cleaning?
Color?

Paint the walls:
Do I just use a normal interior paint?
Glossy/flat?

Make the most out of limited shelf space:
Any storage ideas?

Improved lighting:
Currently I have a 75 watt light bulb..
I need alot more!
Fixed lighting?

A garage for someone is a very, very "personal thing". First of all you have to determine exactly what you want it to become and how much time you plan on spending in it. After you figure that out, let common sense take its path. You have already covered some very important points and answered your own questions. Good luck!

Just when thru that 2 year’s ago
I went from a single 28’x13’ garage to a double 24’x26’
I ‘m still not finish with it but here my suggestion
Lighting , put as much neon light as you can (got 14 double 4’ one’s)
As far as insulating, if you work in it and you live in cold weather, insulate it to the max
Check your local rules, here in Quebec its R32 in the attic and R20 for the walls
As far as Garage doors I put 2 of them only mistake I did, I got then 7’ wide only
I should have gone with 8’ one’s
Wall’s if you will be washing cars and your budget permits it (mine did not) I would got
with water-resistant sheetrock walls
Floors I would definitely go with epoxy paint
Painting the walls, get paint you can wash easily and again water-resistant
good luck!

Greetings llama_boy!

Are you putting up dry wall and painting it?
If you are not, the space between the studs
can be utilized for small item storage. I
Have cut several short boards for between
these studs and have put all my Bullitt
detailing items there.

As for heat, you are lucky since you are
in TX but as for A/C you are unlucky since
you are in TX. You are in TX, right? I notice
that below your icon you have Finland but
I figured you were having fun with this on
your trip. Oh yeah, since your house is
attached run a duct.

The other stuff you are addressing I don't
know doo-doo about. Looks like Karl
has you covered.

Yep just having fun with the address thing while I'm on the road again! Just heard that I will be in S'pore in about a week.. I'll have to think of another locale for that.

Washable paint
Waterproof sheetrock
Garage Attic flooring
Plastic tile
recessed storage

These are GREAT ideas. Thanks

Wow! Now let's compare that to Nasty's garage in the previous post.

mb4875, you are missing the all important Cuisinart box! What are you thinking?
Also, your floor has black square spots on it! What's up with that...GEEEZ?!

(go back and see the box)

You need a stand up air compressor with a "Groits Garage" air hose reel that mounts to the wall or to the ceiling. Got to blow that car off and it is great when doing some painting of car parts. Also, get the catalog from Groits, at http://www.griotsgarage.com/index.jsp they are great when added value is what you are trying to achieve in your home's extra room. I have had cabinets built for all my wife's stuff and I still enjoy all the creature comforts - TV - that I had wished my dad had. You'll enjoy it allot. Call me at 805 563-7699 if you want ideas or need information.

hey llama boy, i know a/c. be careful how much duct u run to the garage. if u run 1 duct or 2 ducts and dont do it right u can end up stealing too much air from the living space. my suggestion if u have room on your unit is run 1 or two duct of moderate size(if run one use 8-9", if run 2 ducts, 7" each)be sure to put mechanical dampers on each run so u can close off air to garage when not in use....this is a pain, but if u leave them wide open all the time, i can promise u will have airflow problems on which ever system u attatch ducts too.air is like water, it will take the path of least resistance.....hope this helps

Thanks for the AC tip bullittboy. I should have some time in about a month for the project.. My wife painted the walls while I was on my last trip, I wonder what it would take to have her epoxy the floor on my next one?
