I just dug through some old posts under mechanical issues and noticed that some people stated that they were averaging 21 mpg while others have seen 27 mpg on road trips. Please tell me how you do it? I've just measured my third tank of gas w/ mixed city and highway driving. I even tried to stay out of the gas during this whole tank in an effort to post a high mpg mark. I ended up with 17.21 mpg. This is on a car w/ 2000 miles on the odometer.
Maybe the difference in our mpg readings is how we measure? I start by resetting the tripmeter to 0 when I fill up my tank. I then drive it down to near empty and fill it up again. At this point, I write down how many miles are posted on the odometer and how many gallons I've just put in the tank and do the math. Are some of you guys guessing?

I have a spreadsheet I created that computes MPG/tank, average MPG (full all tanks to date), total fuel $, average fuel cost/day, etc. I drive a full tank and refill completely each time. I then enter miles driven since last fill-up, total gallons pumped, and fuel cost. I drive a mix of city/highway. On Phoenix city streets I accelerate fairly hard to about 60MPH. Most limits are 45MPH but it's pretty common to do 60MPH without having the cops look your way (that's another story). I am currently averaging 16.666 MPG after 2600 miles, if that helps. I have yet to take my car on a full-fledged road trip so I cannot comment on fuel economy for pure highway driving.

Mine is not a daily driver yet, waiting for a lease to expire, so I have mainly driven around town only on short trips and have been getting around 20 mpg. I did take it on one 200 mi round trip and got about 24 mpg for that trip.

I have 1600 miles on my Bullitt and have gotten as low as 20.1 mpg to 24.6 mpg. Most of my driving is rural.

I average about 19.5 to 22 mpg driving mixed city and highway. Mileage seemed to get better as the engine breaks in.

I got 25.4 mpg highway driving with cruise on at 75 mph. That's the best I've gotten...the worst? An impressive 15.1 mpg (I was driving hard the whole time...)

#353 averages consistant 21.5mpg city/hiway
and 27.2 hiway (cruse set at 70mph)... well OK, only consistant when I drive gently. It is a lot more fun to hourse around dumping raw gas into the top of the motor, but that really kills the gas milage. Milage drops to below 18 when I run through a tank accelerating hard. Crusing above 70mph also drops the milage drastically.

I've never gotten less than 20mpg, and my best was 24.41. I also check mine to full tank every time, and for 3071 miles, I've averaged 21.6 per tank.

I usually average 16 to 17 mpg. Of course thats in bumper to bumper traffic for 28 miles from North of Boston to Newton, MA. Average driving time is about 1 hour and 10 minutes. I think the reason my gas mileage is so low is that its so frustrating just sitting in traffic that when there is a rare opening, the car gets driven hard. Like up to 100 at least once per day. Of course its now put up for the winter and I do all my driving in my 91 Accord which gets around 25 mpg. Its a little different doing 100 in tha car though.
