If your A/C compressor fails, or A/C clutch/pulley breaks, the A/C pulley will freeze...and your serpentine belt will break, your car will be un-drivable.
If you are out on the road and need a quick repair, you can bypass the A/C pulley with a shorter serpentine belt. Below is a pic of the altered belt path, and the belt part # from Autozone. Only tools you will need are a 3/8" drive and 10mm socket...the 10mm to undue the tension pulley unit to slip the belt behind and underneath the pulley, and the 3/8" drive to take up the slack on the tension arm to position the belt (the tension pulley arm has a 3/8" drive hole).
For $13, this might be cheap insurance to carry this in the trunk if you have a high mileage car and it breaks while out in the middle of no-where. It takes less than 5 minutes to repair and get you running again.

I'm sorry to bump an old post, but I wanted to mention that this belt is not the correct one to use for a 2000GT. I don't know what car the original poster was referring to, but when I belted my '00GT in this manner, the belt was about 2" too long.

It would just barely drive my accessories, and I would get terrible belt squeal at engine speeds above 1500rpm.

Just in case someone searches and finds this thread, I want them to know that it's not right for an '00GT.

Many of us with original A/C compressors will need this just in case. My compressor is rattling like crazy when the A/C is off. Its not as loud when its on but any how great info.
I know this is a old thread but very usefully.

That sounds like all you need is a new clutch plate, pulley, bearing. I believe they sell it all in one package. Not that bad to change.

anyone know the part number for the clutch/pulley kit mentioned above? i did this belt change two years ago but driving in this GA summer heat is NOT FUN and would like to give it one last try before having to just chunk the whole A/C system and wait until i am rich to afford A/C again.

thanks in advance!

Rock auto has a Motorcraft rebuilt kit YBR105RM for $120 including the $20 core.
Almost any parts store will have this as that compressor is used on so many models.

Don't get discouraged if after you put it on it still makes noise. You may need to shim it so the plates are not touching when not engaged. Just pull it back off and put a shim/washer in.

My A/C put pooped out on me on the way home from Nats. I'll swipe a shorter belt to try for now until I can determine the true culprit. Thinking it might be the clutch as it is an awful grinding sound when idling.

And any possibility to have this made as a sticky? Some rather helpful info in this thread.

Sorry for your troubles Brad...sounds like a coil going out.
At least the bypass will buy you some time and keep you on the road.

Hard to believe that 3230 was such a high mileage car back in 2004...but...she was!
