Has anyone tried or looked into the power programmer III from Hypertech? I saw it in the Mustang & Fast Fords magazine. Looked better than burning a new chip unless you want to go all out. The price is high, about $500. Any thoughts?

$500?? Sounds high. Someone I talked to locally had gotten a price of around $400. FYI - I bought a Hypertech chip for my previous Mustang, a '95 GT, and although I work for AutoZone corporate, my discount did not apply because it is not a stocked item, but we do carry them - vender direct product - ordered on an as-needed basis. I still saved about $125 over retail. So check with your local AutoZone - you might save a bundle and help keep my paychecks coming!

There have been discussions on this board before and the guys wanted more control over the mod than Hypertech was willing to give them. I live not far from Hypertech here in Memphis and have met them and even had a personalized tour. Some great guys to deal with if this is the type of mod you are looking for. I personally am happy with what I've got and don't plan on adding the power programmer. If you call them, ask for Sean White, I believe his name is.

Thanks for the input Greg. I called Hypertech today before I read your post so I didn't ask for anyone in particular. The fellow I talked to was very helpful Like you said, nice people. It sounds like the control you have is yes or no over the program in the unit they sell ie; frRev limiter, speed limiter and etc. He did say it will give you about 12 HP and 25ft/lbs of torque. The price from them was $435 verses $563 from Shucks.

I just read on the Diablo website that they are now testing software that will allow the end user to tune their chip with a loptop ala LS1Edit for GM's. They didn't say when it would be available but I think I'm going to wait and go that route. Powerprogrammer seems cool, but I'm too much of a tinkerer for as limited and pricy as their product is.

Laptop programmability sounds like the way to go.

I emailed them and asked if they had any plans to do a product for Fords. They said they had their hands full keeping up with GM. I would imagine that won't be the case for long with the demise of the F-bodies. Only so many truck and Vette owners will tinker with this sort of thing. I would think it just makes good business sense for them to apply their expertise to the modular 4.6 market.

Hurry up Diablo!

When you guys talk about programmable chips make sure you are really getting a "programmable" chip! In a previous thread the Hypertech came up so I did a little research.

The timming and mixture are out of your control! It is a predefined on/off feature. "Programmable" my ass! More like a fancy marketing term for flip-chip. It did allow you to raise your rev limiter, which I'm really not interested in doing.. oh yeah you can change your shift points... not very usefull on a Bullitt, eh?

I have decided to get:
Steeda TA - $160
MAFterburner - $???
SpeedCal - $100(for the 4.10s)

I will then have total control of timming mixture and speed correction. Sure it costs a little more but it gives me real control.
