I've had these thoughts rolling through my head more and more the last few weeks. I need some help with the pros and cons. I'm sure there are some others with these thoughts.

The wife has said something THREE times now about ordering the 2008 Bullitt without me bringing it up. And I get to keep the 2001. She even tried to figure out how to go about ordering one for me for Christmas but was unsure of the options I would want. I know. I know. What am I waiting on?

As much as I would like to go buy one, I’m pretty tight with the money and really think hard about these things.

The 2001 is in need of some repairs and I’m not sure how much I want to drop on the repairs and mods I would still like to do. The repairs will be made regardless of what I decide. It’s just matter of how far I take the repairs.

Current needs of the 2001 Bullitt:
The TOB needs replacement. I also will be changing out the cable and clutch fork. The pedal has stiffened up quite a bit lately and when pressing down on the pedal it feels very notchy and rough. I have the Steeda quad and FW adjuster. I'm hoping I haven't screwed up the bearing retainer as it is part of the bellhousing assembly on the 3650. Shifting has gotten intermittently troublesome. If the tranny is bad I can do one of four things. Replace with a used unit out of a later 2003 or 2004 (cost ???), replace with a Promotion rebulit unit ($1350), replace with an upgraded Promotion unit ($1900), replace with a used or rebuilt T-56 ($2000-3000). Labor will be on top of the above costs.

The rear-end makes some noise when turning (differential) and has some slack. I can have the rear-end completely rebuilt and add new gears for approximately $700. Would need to add Spedcal or X-Cal 3 to fix the speedo. ($100 to $400)

The car has a slight vibration at 2000 rpm and higher that needs to be diagnosed. It's there whether the car is moving or standing, neutral or under load. I'm going to have it checked while in the shop. If the input shaft has slop in it could this be the cause of the vibration? It has gotten worse as the TOB noisy has progressed. Could be any cost.

Need front bumper painted in the worst way. The hood has a few chips but could stand some paint as well. I have a couple of dings here and there but the car does have 120k on it. Maybe a new paint job down the road.

There are quite a few wants and other miscellaneous needs. Subframe connectors, front seat covers, trunk lid struts and bumpers, install new ABS module, etc.......

I'm starting to worry more and more about road trips. The car has seen six plus years of daily duty.

I guess my choices are as follows:

Keep the 2001 and buy the 2008.
Sell the 2001 and buy the 2008 (could add some nice mods)
Buy a low mileage 2001 and start fresh

Any thoughts or different ideas would be good. I’ve got so many things running through my mind I can’t think straight. Getting 736 running good again could easily change that probably.

The thought of letting the 2001 is not too appealing but it may well be past the point of return as far as trying to restore and modify since its got so many miles on it. I could end up spending as much on it as a new one.

HELP!!!!!!

Keep the 01 and get the 08. Then in the future fix the 01 alittle at a time, set some money aside for it. Money would be tight with both cars but we only live once.

Charles; My advice would be buy a low milage 01', at the prices they are going for I believe they are an excellent value and you wouldn't have to take the big depreciation hit like on a new one. On the other hand, If you really feel like the 08is a significantly better car than that's a different story. You must put quit a few miles on your cars so if comfort, ride, performance, or whatever you like better about the 08' may be the deciding factor. I don't know it this helps, I'm just glad I don't have to make that decision. Good Luck Ron

Life is short, if you want the 08 go for it. As far as the 01 is concerned, just exactly what do you want? Do you want 2 Bullitts, 1 Bullitt, a low mileage 01 and a high mileage 01, a low mileage 01 and the 08? The choice will be yours to make but, it sounds as if your better half wants you to get the 08, how many hints has she sent your way? If I was in your situation it would not be a problem for me to decide, but that is me.

More than enough. She wants me to have whatever will make me happy. I just can't decide.

I've thought about it more as the day as gone on. I'm taking the car to the shop tomorrow. First up is to get the TOB replaced and whatever else it needs regarding that. If the tranny is trash, I'll cross that bridge then. After that I'll have everything scanned or checked and do whatever needs to be done to get it running 100%instead of 98%. Its amazing how the attitude can change when the car is running good and the car is clean. I hope that's the case. I know the 4.6 is pretty reliable and can last a long time. If I can get a few things in good working order than I will feel a little better about things.

J/Y tranny and rear ends are inexpensive, but something of a crapshoot. Then again, I bought a J/Y tranny for my sons car when it had 37K on the clock and it now is about to go 155K. And that's an Escort ZX2! So, you know what you got for a tranny in your Bullitt at home. And we all know the later trannies are way better right? So what I am saying is take care of the swap while you are willing to.

As for the 08. You want it, buy it if it's financially achieveable. Other wise be happy with what you have. And get a black or blue 01 as money allows... I would!

So are you still going to look at the 08?

After reading your above post you now have me confused, I can now understand why you are confused.

LOL! See. I told ya. I'm putting any thoughts of an '08 on hold until I get the '01 running well. I figure that gives me a chance to have clear thoughts on which way to go down the road. My first thoughts had been to wait a year or so for an '08 but the '01 started acting up and I keep hearing my wife tell me to go ahead and order the '08 if I want it. Deep down I really want to keep the '01. I need to make sure I'm not making a decision based on the fact I'm a little anxious about the car not running well right now.

I think you're doing the right thing, get the '01 running right, then play with it a bit. Car payments suck! Use that monthly cash to mod the '01 as you see fit.

Just think how your wife will feel if you do not get her the 08. That is it, she wants the 08. Now you can have the 01 and she will have the 08. That, Sir, is how it's done..

If you end up selling 736 and you part out some of the after market stuff let me know. I may be interested! :) Good luck with your decisions though. You sound like you've got the situation under control as of now. :)

D***! I haven't even taken my last breath and the vultures are out! :-D Believe me I would strip it bare if I were to trade it. Hopefully the damage is somewhat small to the wallet. The past couple of months have seen more than a couple grand go to repairs and expenses on other family member cars. Sometimes that payment ain't so bad if you know you might make a month or two without large repair bill.

Apparently you underestimate my wife. She's holding out for the Super Snake! :-D She would probably love a GT with an automatic. Something to think about for her next time around. Maybe a CS.

I like the idea of getting a low miles 01. Does that mean you'd get that and the 08? If not, then that decision will be based on which gets you in the gut more. Me personally, the 08 is lacking something, I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe when I see one in person. I just think the 01 looks bad!

I'm thinking this is a classic case of reverse psychology. While your wife may appear to be encouraging you to make this purchase, what she REALLY wants is for you to put aside all these toys and get a nice sensible station wagon type of vehicle. By telling you that you can have what you want, she knows that you'll talk yourself into something else entirely. DON'T FALL INTO HER TRAP! BUY THE 2008 BULLITT IMMEDIATELY AND SAVE YOURSELF FROM A LIFETIME OF MANIPULATION!

Oh, the wiles of the fairer sex! Beware! BEWARE!!

If you bought your '01 Bullitt new,I would keep it and restore it at a later date,if you have the extra garage space to store it. It has memories,I'm sure, when you first bought it.
If the wife wants you to have a new Bullitt,go for it!

Sounds like you have a strong attachment to 736, the more you fix It up the more likely you will want to keep it. As far as wifes input, I can't relate mine let me buy 256 but that was then. Now "BULLITT" in my garage, "WIFE" in her appartment.
