norman,
It is always wise to purge your crankcase when changing brands. Acidic deposits and sludge need to be neutralized to prevent depletion of the new oils additive package.
For this ,I would recommend one of two products:
Neutra http://www.schaefferoil.com
or
Auto-RX http://www.auto-rx.com

The rule of thumb is usually 1 oz. per quart capacity and to run it for about 500 miles before the change.
Hope that helps

How many of you out there change your own oil?

I change mine myself and when the old stuff has drained completely, I will pour approximately 1/2 quart through just to pull any kind of deposits that have settled on the bottom of the pan.

I like to think that the fresh synthetic will pull anything out that didn't drain by itself.

Mid Life,
I went with the "Neutra" as it is more readily available to me, but have heard reports that Auto-RX is an excellent product producing much the same results.

A purge is designed to clean your top-end more so than your sump. Sludge forming on the top does not drain out and can retain acidic residue and wear particles.
