Intake Resonator Delete How-To

Finally got around to removing the intake silencer/resonator. It only cost me $8.47 plus tax, and took less than 10 minutes to complete. I got all the parts at Auto Zone, and are as follows;

(2) Expand Tite 1 5/8" to 1 3/4" Expansion Plug $2.99 ea
(1) Koehler 3/4" to 1 3/4" Hose Clamp, 2pk $2.49

Step 1:
Remove Intake tube from throttle body and filter head.

Step 2:
Remove factory hose clamps that secure the resonator to the intake tube. Discard after removing.

Step 3:
Place expansion plugs in holes, then tighten the nuts which expand the rubber. Then atttach the hose clamps and tighten.

Step 4:
Re-attach Intake tube to TB and intake filter and wha-la, done.

Final Notes:
Make sure you have all the parts before you start. The car will stall out if you attempt to start-up with resonator removed and the holes unplugged.

Any change to the intake noise? Arent you worried about them coming loose and getting sucked into the engine?
Curious...isn't this put there in the first place to prevent 'Moosing' when cold?

('Moosing' was what we in the UK called the strange but horrifically loud 'moaning' noise that 'other' Ford cars, notably the Mks 1+2 Mondeo/SVT Contour and Mk 1 Focus occasionally made during cold starts - the cure was to add a shaped-plastic housing not unlike the piece shown here...later models had it fitted as standard - before the 'fix' weas identified by Ford, we enthusiasts used to fit a 14" piece of HD rubber hose to the intake...lots of drilling and swearing, believe me...)

So what are the benefits of removing this part?
The engine compartment looks so much better without the intake silencer/resonator in there.
I wonder how much different it sounds?
It would be easy to go back to the tank if it doesn't work good. Or if it does work good a person then could buy an after market intake tube to replace it.
Sounds like a win win situation :)
Are there any benefits to this other than aesthetics? It looks easy enough...........
I don't think so, but I am not a engineer .
I would think there would be more air noise coming from the intake, I'm just guessing.

Are you serious?

FRPP sells our CAI aftermarket, and they don't include the resonator. SO it's not for moosing or moaning. It's a silencer to lower intake noise under WOT.

This topic has been covered before, thought I'd do a refresher since the ones floating around weren't that clear. There's no HP gain with this mod, just an increase in intake noise under WOT.
I saw it happen to someone before. Guy bought a car with nitrous. Removed the kit and plugged the whole on the intake where the nozzle was. 3 months later the plug wasnt in the whole it was inside the engine.
Don't think I will do this myself, but I was curious about the actual how to.

Thanks for the great write up. :)
The Mach 1 has one of those and they used to sell (maybe they still do) ones for it that had a pony on it. I got one for my friend and we put it on his a long time ago..does what already said, quiets the WOT some, but the looks is much better without it.

Steeda actually makes one for the Fusion, which has a long resonator tube that almost runs paralell to the entire intake. I'm curious to see if it would fit the Bullits. I'll be buying one for my wife's 09 Fusion V6.

Looks to me as the lip would stop it from being"sucked" into the engine.Just for looks though I don't know if I would do this one .Louder at WOT as higher picthed or more of a rumble?
I suspect that the resonator may be there in attempt to tune in that "Bullitt sound"... Exhaust note is only part of it. It has a pretty good intake howl when punched.
interesting... so do you like the sound better this way over the stock sound? how is the sound you hear different with your new set up? great write up too, nick!
Good thread. I am suprised how many people are afraid to do this if they are staying mostly stock. It should give you a few ponies and make it sound better. Like a car with some grunt. I like the lould intake sound, its sweet. It should also improve fuel economy with the air going less places. So quick recap, more power, little money, and a great sense of accomplishment. I give it an A+
here is the mach 1 resonator plug:

I saw a carbon fiber piece for the first turn of the intake that looked nice. I think that along with a couple of pieces from Spectre will be the way I go for a combo carbon fiber & polished aluminum look with Spectre polished stainless clamps with rubber hidden for a all custom polished look. I will just box my stock intake to save for another day. I will take pics after I do it. Good idea on how to plug though.
Warning!!!!!!
Save yourself some kind words and go ahead and get one size bigger on the hose clamps! I couldnt for the life of me get the 3/4-1/3/4 to fit.
Noticed a little more intake "whine" but not much....o and 50 hp is all I got lol
