Anyone seriously race one of these?

Saw one on my way to work. I usually dut everyone coming out of the toll gates, but this Blue Audi was unreal! Could not believe that she could keep up, much less felt like keeping up. Drove all around her, trying to see what kind of Audi this was. No emblems I could read at 120, just the Audi rings and a multicolored badge I could not make out.
After doing some research once I arrived at work, I have deduced that it was an S4. Pretty damn quick, but a softer ride and a bit quieter at speed, I would guess. Not bad at all, if you like four doors.

If I remember correctly, the current S4 is a twin-turbo V6 that makes +/-250 HP. A very fast car, especially once it gets rolling and the turbos spool-up. I think its performance numbers are similar to the Bullitt. Maybe not as fast 0-60 because of the weight of the AWD and lower torque, but once it gets going, hold on.

With a chip mod, it'll make over 300hp.

The downside? 2 turbos prone to fail and the engine has to be pulled out to change them in pairs.

My last Audi turbo kept me from buying another Audi. Word is that the new S4 will be a V8. I may buy an NA Audi...

I raced one of these at the end of last summer. The car was very fast. We were on the highway in very light traffic. I kept him behind me the whole time, but it wasn't until I hit 120 mph that he started to fade. Maybe his car was running out of oommff or maybe he didn't feel like getting a ticket for several hundred dollars. Either way, I needed every bit of that 120 to pull away.

And after the chip mod, the manual trans goes.. At 250HP (stock), it's already at a high state of tune.

The S4 is a great track car: the Audi sponsored S4's (two of them) won the Speedvision GT Touring car championship (Michael Galatti). This class includes 911s, M3's (the euro V8 version?), C5 Corvettes, Mustangs (Cobras?), and a very cool (just one) Acura NSX with a supercharger (he almost won the championship (Peter Cunningham): he won too much early on and had boost reduced and weight added until the Audis were competitive). Otherwise, the NSX was untouchable.

No offense, but it's a German car. They don't run out of ooomph at 120, they're just getting started.

No, the M3's in WC are not V8s. The V8 isn't even a euro M3 engine. The V8 is a 4L from the M5. That's where the controversy in ALMS comes from. They (BMW) mixed engines and chassis to make competitive car.

Except for the fact that the NSX was never sold with a Supercharger. PD didn't even need the SC to win. Two or three years ago he raced the same car without the forced induction and won the c'ship. PD is just a master of getting his own way! He has the World Challenge officials wrpped around his little finger...

At least one team will run supercharged M3s in Speedvision (or Speedchannel... or whatever.)

I was lucky enough to help some (a few hours) with IAMG's S4 out of FtWorth. They took a showroom car and stripped it out, caged it and made it a racer. When Galatti's car wasn't ready for Daytona, they let him use their car. He rolled it and totaled it.

IAMG got from Audi a bare chassis (except for cosmoline) and moved the drivetrain over.

APR tuned the chip-- and that car was making some real power.

At that time, I just got married and moved into a house-- not much time to help out.

S4's are hotrods. Even the 1.8T engines are making insane torque when tuned. So, if it's an Audi or VW... watch it.

Then I guess he was just a wuss. Additionally, his car is governed to a top speed of 142 mph (Car & Driver October 2001), so I don't think he was just getting started. Maybe if we were on the Autobahn things may have been different.

A friend of mine test-drove a 2002 S4 with me in the car. He didn't like it. While it did have the potential for "umph", it was slow to accelerate (probably cuz of the AWD). After we left the dealership, he said that a standard Mustang GT (let alone a Cobra) would be a much better choice for power and cost--despite the fact that they're two very different cars for two very different markets...

We'll see what happens when Audi changes the S4 for 2003.

No- because it's a 2 ton beast.
My lighter A4 was AWD and it would smoke 5.0 Mustangs all day. The AWD does make it a problem when launching. With the Mustang, drop the clutch and you'll get smoke from the tires... with AWD, drop the cluch and you'll get smoke from the clutch.

Really? Saleen S7-R's, eh?. Or maybe they are Saleen Mustangs...

Here's the V8 M3 GTR:

http://www.rsportcars.com/eng/cars/bmw_m3gtr.html

I do not believe it is available in the US, thus it's a euro car. The "BMW M3 V8" appears to be popular in the GT class of American Le Mans Series. The engine may have been derived from the M5's V8, but appears to be quite a bit modified (just like the 650 HP V8 in the C5-R is "based" on the LS1, it is radically different (and quite a bit bigger to compete with the Vipers and Saleen S7-R)).

JayP,

My last car was a 1995 Mustang GTS (last year of the 5.0). No offense, but I never lost to any Audi that did not have an S in it's name.

Of course, I'm assuming every one that I beat was stock. Can't say whether or not I ever went up against any modified Audis.

My car ran 14psi boost vs 7psi stock. Good for 230lbft. With the added traction of AWD, I'd pull a car length before the Mustang could move 2 feet.

I blew away a jackass in a '99 Cobra 'vert. He was revving up at the light, wanting to show off his new car to his gal. Still had paper tags.

By 50 or 60mph, I had him by a car length. He'd lost traction while I was putting away.

I slowed to see what this guy would say but he wouldn't turn to look.

The Audi wasn't good for stoplight drags. At the end, the clutch wasn't looking that swell.

Twice the boost of stock? Yeah, I'd say that's modified. It suffices to say, I probably never messed with anyone who had that much going for him.

Stop light to stop light you probably have to drive that car like you hate it though.

I had a 91' Eclipse GSX, overall the car was a pile of sh**, but the AWD was great.

7psi was pretty low. Audi ran these low boost turbos to reduce the amount of turbo lag.

14psi was about as much as the stock pipes and turbo could take. I popped a few hoses. No big deal.

The new 180hp Audis and VWs run basicly the same engine but added boost. The 225hp TT is the same thing with another intercooler and hardpipes.

APR in Alabama has a GTI thats getting to 300lbft and 290hp.

Had a friend race one with his 2000 GT. Bumber/bumper until ~50mph, then the audi pulled away. Those things are fast. The Audi guy told him that though the cars are fast, they are fragile. He bumped a curb while parking and needed 2k in front end work. Two weeks later bought a boxter. The GT can clean that one easily at 1/2 the $$.

Long live the 'Stang
