I just discovered Bullitclub and have been reading the extensive posts on the transmission and "death rattle" problems. I am now afraid to start my car. I have some questions that I can't find specific answers to in the posts I've read.
1)Are the problems happening mainly in the earlier cars? Seems like most numbers are pretty low.
2)Are the mechanical engine/tranny problems only happening in the Bullitt and not the GT? If so, Do we have a different long block and transmission from the standard 2001 GT?

In now have 8000+ miles on 5064 and the only sign of trouble is the Hologram problem and a very slight 1-2 shift notchy feel that goes away in about two blocks, but nothing like what I'm reading here. (he knocks on wood)

Thanks, and what a great board.

Not to worry,I haven't had any problems yet with Bullitt 503. Yeah, the trans is a bit notchy when cold, but runs fine otherwise. My 351W,in my 85 LX has very slight piston slap with the KB Hyperutectic, cast pistons also,I fitted those at .0025 clearence. The Bullitt,I noticed has a slight amount of that also, but goes away.

Don't worry, enjoy the drive. Most of our Bullitts have no problems. Yes they all have 1-2 catch when cold, and I think most will show mild piston slap when cold. There are some cars where these problems are major and Ford needs to fix those, but if yours doesn't show any by now I think you are home free!

To answer your questions:
1). There does not seem to be any correlation with problems and build number. This club has conducted several polls and nothing sticks out.
2). The piston slap problem is common to all 4.6l and 5.4l modular V-8 engines. It is not Bullitt specific. The 1-2 transmission shift problem is common to the Tremec 3650 transmission which was first introduced in the Bullitt, but is now in all GT's and Cobra's.

I personally think Bullitt owners are more in tune with their machines than the typical car owners and so they notice things and demand more fron the car.

Thanks to everyone for the information. I feel much better about my car, but I sure hope Ford stands behind the product for the problem cars out there. These problems must take a lot of pleasure out of owning a really great concept car. As more of the trannys and modular motors get out there it will be less likely Ford will be able to brush off the problems. I guess I now need to go to my dealer and address the fact my numbers are disappearing off of my Hologram. I feel fortunate to have only this minor problem.

Bullitt5064, welcome to the BullittClub!
I saw what you had stated about your
hologram numbers disappearing. You may have
already read the previous posts on the
hologram but just in case you didn't, please
don't touch it with anything while detailing
your engine compartment. Just trying to get
the word out. Again, welcome!

Fear not! While some of us have had troubles with our cars not much "that" serious has arisen and certainly nothing that would keep me from running my car. Just keep an ear out for anything really out of the ordinary. You'll get to know the sounds your car makes, and be able to tell pretty readily when something "Not right" happens. In the end remember.. you have a full factory warranty to fall back on. While none of us want to see our cars in the shop the warranty is there to protect you.
So, enjoy your car and welcome to the club!

Like what was stated before----most of us have had no problems. The warranty is there for 3 years 36000 miles and if there are still continuous problems with it throughout the warranty(which is a pain in the butt to deal with)---you could always get rid of it when it (warranty)expires. You probably will be able to get rid of it quite easily by then.

I have about 4300 miles on mine with no problems in my opinion. The transmission does feel a bit notchy, but I think it's just the way the transmission is.

I too have the 1-2 shift "notch" which goes away after the trans warms up. After reading here about Red Line D-4 I had the tranny fluid drained and replaced with D-4. It made absolutely no difference so, save your money. Some day I'll try the GM synchromesh fluid but I'm not in any hurry. The best "tip" I got from this site, so far, was how to restart my car when it was warm. Sometimes I would go out to start my car after shopping and it wouldn't start. Acted like it was flooded. After waiting a few minutes it would start but those were some of the longest minutes I,ve experienced in a long time. Anyhow, I learned here that you have to turn the key to the "on" position and leave it for 4-5 seconds while the fuel pump repressurizes the fuel line. I turn it to "on", and when the seat belt bell stops going "dong" then it's time to start the car. Works every time now. Enjoy your Bullitt, you're one of the few, fortunate people to have one. It's your responsibility to take care of it and never sell it for less than $28,500! Cheers, Tony

adequate, well...I didn't know about that.
(key to on for 4-5 seconds)
But now I do! Thanks for putting that info
here.

If the Bullitt motors are continuing to be used in the GTs, then why do I keep reading posts that new Bullitt motors are not available anymore? Are they talking about complete motors with the Ford Motorsports intake and TB, and not just the long block assembly?

I'm having GM syncromesh put in right now and will post results as soon as I get it back but other than that I've had no problems. The notchiness when cold is so minor if this doesn't work I'm forgetting about it. Dissapears in 10 minutes or less depending on the outside temp. I sincerely do believe the GM fluid will alleviate the problem though.
