Just got the car painted and the body shop guy told me that I can't wax my car for 6 months! You'd think by now they would have made some advances in paint technology that allows it to have a shorter setting time. I'm call them back to make sure I heard him right. 6 months...sheesh

That does sound like a long time!
Maybe Budacad or Gman could pipe in.
I am no paint curing expert.

Call them back-I've been told 60 days inthe past while the new paint "gases out" and fully cures. But better safe than sorry.

That's strange, because after 435 was broken into last May (and only ten days old then) the dealership did a blend job after the repairs and never gave me that warning.

I had the car waxed soon after and it still looks fine to my eyes. I wonder what the deal is...

The key here is you can NOT WAX the car for 6 months. The body shop should take the care back in a month and rub it a second time. They will put something lime Mirror Glaze #7 on the car. It is not a wax but will make it shine like you can't believe. Also depending on how much the have wet sanded the car, it will even look like a mirror. I would also bet that they have already rubbed and mirror glazed the car for you. But this is not a wax. The 6 months is to let the paint cure and actually stretch. To be honest I would say it's ok to wax after the second rubbing.

The real question is what you want to put on the car. We all call it WAX, but most of us are using Polish. The difference is that we can put it on the car week after week and it will not build up. Wax will build up and actually cause problems.

Ask the body shop when they are planning to rub the car and what they are going to put on it. You may want to use that for a short period of time. Then if you want, you can go back to a WAX.

Hope this helps.

Well I like to use zaino and that is not exactly a wax, so that should be all right to use. I'll call them back and ask them about a second rubbing, they didn't mention anything to me about any follow up work in the future. I'm calling tomorrow.

Hey Danner,

You want to make sure they rub the car a second time. Otherwise it will suck down and you will see all the sanding they did to prep it for the paint job. It will look fine in the sun, but in a garage or shop under florecent lights it will scare the heck out of you . Typically a shop will wait 30 days to rub the car.

Please let us know how it goes.

Bud

PS I am back to the dealerhip tomorrow over BAD paint issues. I'm going to make them stip the entire front end of the BAD paint that has been put on the car 4 times. I should have just done it my self, but I did not spend all that money to have to paint my own car ;-(.

This is nice to know BUDACAD. I am getting my 69 back in April from the paint shop with a $7,000 paint job and I want to see what they say about a second rub. When we had the trunk repainted shortly after delivery on Bullette, the shop did not say anything about a 2nd rub or not using a wax.... :???:

Hey Bud - I've been saying the same thing about wax all along. Polish, polish, polish - the only way to go. Someone actually e-mailed me personally about me saying not to use wax! Can you believe it! He owns a body shop and said he uses wax all the time. I didn't reply, but I had a few choice words for him(you're out there and you know who you are!)

Anyway - he hit the nail on the head - he polishes or should I say waxes for a living. He missed the point - some much for having an opinion! I have several friends that are painters and they all preach - no wax!

Hee hee heee... It has been a long debate for many years. My biggest problem with WAX is what it takes to paint over it. Remember the old Hot WAX methods? I remember having an entire paint job slide right off the Blazer and onto the floor. Uggg...

Polish is much SAFER protects as well if not better.

Just say no to WAX.

See ya.

Well I finally got around to calling them and they cleared everything up. They said its 6 weeks, just to be sure, but typically 3-4 weeks. I asked them about the second rubbing and they said "No, the car doesn't need to be rubbed a second time because we base coat, clear coat, and then bake our cars in an oven so they don't need a second rubbing." Even though zaino is a polish, I'll still wait the extra three weeks.

I would keep an eye on the car and ask what the warrenty is on the paint. Baked just means that it was forced to dry to fast.

Wax is ok, but it builds up. Then you have to strip it off. Polish can be put on over and over. 227 is Black and every time I wash it, I need to polish it so that it looks good. Ohterwise it looks really bad.

Good luck with the car.

Polish, by its very nature, is abrasive. Meant to lightly cut into the oxidation in the same way "rubbing compound" cuts into heavy oxidation and scuffs and scratches. Be very careful recommending polish to members...not all polishes are created equal!

This is from Zainos website about thier Z-2 polish.
===================================
Z-2 bonds with the paint pigment and will get "wetter," "deeper and richer" with multiple coats, it will also help eliminate swirl marks. Z-2 is a hydrophobic-based formula and contains no abrasives, harmful silicones, or yellowing carnauba wax.

Leaves no powder or white residue in cracks, is non-greasy, non-oily, anti-static, will not attract dust or dirt and can be applied to the entire vehicle in the sun or shade.

Z-2 polish is a true paint protectant designed to replace traditional waxes. It will give your paint finish total environmental protection and is the only protectant you will ever need. It will offer more protection than any wax in the industry.

It will outperform, outprotect, outshine and outlast anything on the market today. Guaranteed!
===================================

I was impressed when I put it on the new Bullitt but what impressed me the most was when I put it on an 9 year old faded white Toyota. The hood looked more like chaulk than white paint. ONE coat it shined just like the Bullitt.
Sold me...............

What would you suggest to get set up on the Zaino system, Larry?

I haven't got the slightest idea as to which products to buy. :???:

You can email them and they have ONE dealer per state. They will send you his email address. If he is not local you can just go through their website.
Z-1 polish lock
Z-2 polish
Z-5 for heavy swirl removal
Z-6 for touch up, almost the favorite item
Z-18 Claybar, little work but only one time
ZFX is new, from what I can tell you add it to the Z-2 or Z-5 and it is an "acceleration and appearance additive" Also if you get this you do not need the Z-1 then. I have not tried this one yet. Z-7 is thier wash if you want that. Seems ok.
Seems like a lot but when I got all of mine I think it was around $80. (no ZFX then)
Like I said the Bullitt shine did not sell me but putting in on the old car that looked like Chaulk sure did. That was 8 months ago and I have not touched it since then except an occassional wash and it is still shinning.
