Before I read Green Pony’s post The '68 Bullitt had a Chevy 302!?!? I read a previous post that took me here http://www.wsradio.ws/mustangarchives.htm. The combination of these two post got me thinking and now I have a question about the origins of the BULLITT sound.

In the interview with Art Hyde, he said they sound mapped the exhaust system from the movie BULLITT.
Digitally mapped, matched the spectrum with the exhaust tuning of the car.
After wards, they were talking with Chad McQueen, and he said, that wasn’t a Mustang in the movie Bullitt, it was a NASCAR stock car. The original sound was dubbed over.

So now I’m wondering which Manufacture and Model NASCAR was used? Was it a Chevy, Plymouth, Dodge or Ford?

Doesn’t matter to me, it sounds good no matter what car sound was used.
But for a Ford fanatic and Chevy hater, it would be something if in fact they did use a Chevy for the exhaust tuning on the BULLITT.

From my info. a Ford GT-40 race car was used for the Bullitt sound track, either in 289 or 427 tune. Chevrolet was nowhere to be found in NASCAR in 1968 and I know it wasn't a Chrysler product, since the 426 Hemi was the engine of choice then, and let me tell you from personal expierence, that won't no HEMI!

This is from the magazine that burst my bubble about the exhaust: Mustang Monthly - October 2001:

DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. The 01 Bullitt has a very distinctive sound-nothing like the normal GT (why folks want to modify it with flowmasters and the like is beyond me - is it worth losing one this cars most distinctive features for a few extra hp? - whats the next mod--the seats and guages??).

Someone needs to pin Art Hyde down at a car show but I was told by a Ford Engineer-they tried to match the sound from the movie soundtrack and were having problems doing so--no wonder! That is when they learned from Chad McQueen about the sound dubbing. So Team Mustang stopped trying (or already may have done so) to match the movie sound note for note but still came up a with a damn nice 'distinctive' sound that no other Mustang has--ENJOY!

I read that in Mustang Monthly also. Totally forgot about it until Bullitt3618 bought it up. I still have the issue. I guess Art Hyde either miss quoted Chad McQueen or Chad McQueen could have miss spoke or just didn’t remember correctly, to it being a NASCAR stock car.

I drove a neighbors Mustang GT (2000) a couple of weeks back. Our BULLITS do sound nice compared to a stock, but it’s not really so much that it sounds better, more like, it can be heard. I couldn’t believe how quite his was.

It's about time for a Bullitt trivial pursuits game!

Check out this DHG looking GT-40

OK, I read it, But I didn't see anything about Chevy motor in the Mustang just the truck used for the film rigg. Also the article doesn't mention 2 Mustangs where used.
Or am I moroon and can't read?

One thing isn't quite right about this GT-40 story though. I just happened to catch DreamCar Garage,on Speedvision, and wouldn't you know their Dream car drive was in a totaly restored GT-40,with the big 427. Now I noticed that due to the 180 degree tuned headers these cars were built with, the engine sounded like an unmuffled race engine with AN X-PIPE! It had a lot of crackle to the exhaust also. It didn't sound like the sound track in the Bullitt chase scene. Really the 68 Bullitt sounds like a 390 with glasspack mufflers, with a road race type driving/shifting style, double clutching. Oh and by the way, does anyone know the reason for the number 40,in the GT-40 name!

That an easy one 408. The DT-40 stood 40 inches tall at the roofline, anctually 39.8 or something engineer-like, so it was rounded to 40.

Let's not forget that Steve McQueen was no stranger to the racing scene. The double clutch upshifts would be right in sync with his real life, race driving. No doubt, Paul Newman would have similar tendancies.

Let's not forget-Chad McQueen was all of what, 10 years old, when Bullitt was filmed--I think we can forgive the guy for being 'off' on remembering what kind of 'race' car was used for the sound--BUT I seriously doubt it was a Chevy 302--the sound is way too different--chaulk that one up to a 'urban rumor' that just lives on for no reason. I just finished packing up at the Sacramento Autorama--a couple of fully restored Showroom STOCK 302 Camaro's fired up upon leaving the show-the sound is very distinctive and in no way close to the movie Mustang sound.

OK I knew I read it somewhere,

After Keller and Yates finished editing the chase, John Kean went to work recording and mixing in the sound of the revving engines and squealing tires. Kean and Bud Ekins took the cars to Willow Springs Raceway near Los Angeles for the recording.

Remember this movie was about making it real. They used the real cars for the audio for any dubbing they needed to add.
