I have been able to protect the hood paint
from the scoop lip with 3M black electrical
tape. The tape is applied to the hood and is
out of sight. (I tried to write this whole
post before but I keep getting logged out so
I wrote a short post to get it in the
system. I will explain via edits...sorry)
I had heard of some people having paint
chipping problems around the scoop so I
decided to take the scoop off to see what
was going on. First, the hood liner must be
taken out. A fork works well on the black
plastic fasteners for removal. You will also
need to undo the braided retention bolt
on passenger side aft hood area. The whole
liner needs to come out because the hood
needs to be closed so you can apply the tape.
After the liner is out, seven bolts hold the scoop on,
undo these from under the hood.
be careful not to drop the nuts into the
engine compartment. Now lower the hood and
lift off the scoop.
There was a definite wear line where scoop
met hood, no chipping though. Now take
the electrical tape and put it on so that
it will just cover the wear line and not be
visible once the scoop is on. That wear line
is your template. You can check to see the
tape application is out of sight by placing
the scoop on after each strip is applied.
If it is not aligned take a mental picture,
lift the scoop off and realign the tape.
It was actually pretty easy to do. Once the
tape looks good with the scoop on, reinstall
bolts, liner and fasteners.
Not only is the hood paint protected but also
the paint on the scoop. Cleartastic would be
perfect for this. Once Ed can get access to
a Bullitt or a GT he may come out with an
under scoop protection kit.
I guess the electrical tape could be applied
to the bottom edge of the scoop instead of
on the hood. That way you could take the
scoop into your warm house and apply the
tape there and not freeze your a** off in
the garage or outside.
Total time spent on this was about 2 hours.
