This guy at work who owns a Porsche Boxster "S" wants to race me. He doesn't want to drag race but what he refers to as a "roll on" race. We both start in 3rd gear @30 MPH. then we both punch it to redline, without shifting in each respective car. My question is this, who would out accelerate who? Just want some opinions before I embarrass myself.

Boxster -- 250 Hp
7000 redline
2800 lbs

It'll be close, especially from a rolling start. You'd have him if you started from a stand-still, that's probably why he wants to start on a roll. You should be able to take him, but not more than one or two car lengths at the most. It'll be close! Let us know how it goes. And if he wins, just remind him that we paid less than half as much for our car...

I'm not sure who'll win, all I can say is be careful. Those Boxters are pretty small and they can pack quite a punch.

I took a quick look and this is what I came up with.....

Boxter
3rd gear ratio 1.41
rear end 4.17

Bullitt
3rd gear ratio 1.32
rear end 3.27

at 30 mph he will be doing 2367 rpm
at 30 mph you will be doing 1694 rpm

Figure he will jump a little bit on you but he only has 225 foot lbs of torque at 4500 rpm you have 325 at 4000.

his 7200 rpm redline will only get him 91 mph
your 6200 rpm will get you 105+mph and then the limiter is going to kick in so be aware of that...

Sounds like he is already beat in his mind that is why he is setting conditions...

I think you can take him. Throw the stuff out of the trunk and run your gas tank down. See if you can get him to go fill his up, also see if he wants to take a passenger with him so he can show them how it is really done. Man will he be p*ssed.....

After you go with a roll start go from a dead stop, then go from 60 to 100,then from 70 to 120 then so on & so on & so on just GO
BTW Be Careful!

I'd tell him to take a hike. He challenged you AND wants to set the conditions? Not the way it works in my world. Sounds like it is worrying him more than you.

Do not even think about it--under those conditions he will 'kill you'. Look at mid-life's numbers-they are accurate. In 3rd gear at 1600rpm you are going to bog down and die. Your power range does not come on until 2500+ meanwhile he will be starting off in his. 30 mph is ok--but do it in SECOND GEAR and you will blow by him.

Today my son and I were in Las Vegas and we pulled along side a new Boxter. I asked my kid if he liked them and he said "Not really, they're kind of slow. I kicked one's butt with the '97 GT."

All I did was roll my eyes. Another drag race of his I didn't know about 'til now.

I think they do look nice, though.

You will probably beat him, especially if you have 3.73's or lower gears. I have a friend with a boxter and we have never raced, but we have travelled on several road trips and whenever he pulls on the intersate he steps on it and I, at 30 to 40 mph have absolutely NOOOOOO problem from running right up his &ss in 3rd. Whenever I enter the interstate first at the same approximate speed, I goose it in 3rd and he always falls back and does not keep up initially.
GOOD LUCK.

I have to agree with the group. that is a sketchy race. If he wants to set conditions then tell him you'll agree to his terms only after he agrees to add 500 lbs. to his car. if he says no then tell him you get to start in second.

Either way just beat him.

I'd race him under his conditions and then tell him that he has to race under yours. And when he asks what yours are, simply tell him you don't have any, lets just let it rip in any gear at any speed as long as there is an equal start. Tell him he can choose--rolling start, dead stop start, what ever he wants--just no gear restrictions or any other silliness. If there really is "No substitute" for his Porsche (as the saying goes), whats he so scared or worried about?

Biff,

Tell him not to be a girly-man and drag race him from a stop. Sounds like he's trying to justify spending all that money and make you feel bad.
WTF???? I hate that!!!

It sounds like this is going to be a really close race. I wouldn't agree to his terms though. If he's confident about his car he shouldn't mind about starting from a dead start. Also, shifting through the gears while racing is a technique. Good luck and be safe!!!!!!

there's a reason he wants to do it from a "rolling start".......that's the only way he has a chance to beat you!!!
no!!
a race is a race...heads up...down the 1/4 mile....from a standing start!!

Well , two weeks after buying 5181 I came across a Boxster S on the way back from Las Vegas. We were doing 80 , he dropped a gear and hit it and I only dropped to fourth gear. I caught him at 100 and pulled out to 2 cars at 120 and had him by about 3 car lengths at redline (close too 140). If you start in second you will smoke him. Third might make it to close to call. That's my 2 cents. Lots o'luck.

Biff,

"S" stands for: Sissy!

His gears will allow him to reach his peak HP and Torque sooner than you, but his peak HP isn't until 6200 rpm's so it may be a close call.

I'd say, play it from a stop, and even go to the track if I were you, just tell him, go to the track, get a 6 pack for whoever wins and that's it. You'll be drinking that night...
...at home, that is.
