Since the Bullitt went to the dealers in October for the shift fork fix, I haven't had the shifter off. Over the past two weeks I've wanted to redo the throw height on the Tri-ax, but I can't get the ball off. I've tried heated leather gloves, a wrench with towels, yelling. Anyone have any ideas?

not to insult your intelligence or anything, but counter-clockwise always works for me. just kidding! i've never had that problem so far, persistance will always pay off though, i'd keep trying with the gloves, somtimes (as is my experience) the wrench will rub through the towel and create some nasty scratches! also, yelling and throwing a fit usually scares anything into submission

First a thanx to Lok N Lod for this tip..
I was having the same difficulty getting mine off. The suggestion.. a pair of rubber gripped gardening gloves.. the rubber holds the shifter much better and tighter than leather.. you could also try some simple dishwashing gloves..
Good Luck!

A few bean burritos at the local Taco Bell followed by 15 minute wind breaking session seated near the suspect shifter knob may be enough to influence the knob to dislodge. Use caution though as it may also melt the vinyl section of the seat.

they make a wrench that doesnt use plier type teeth but a strap instead. Kind of like an oil filter wrench that tightens around a circular object and as you turn counter clockwise it gets tight around the round object. I have heard that works just fine plus the strap will not harm the finish of the ball.

Have you tried a hammer? If so, have you tried a bigger hammer?

I was able to raise the TriAx without removing the knob- just lifted the boot up, inverting it. Gave just enough room to remove the bolts.

Maybe if you got the TriAx off the tranny and onto a vise, you could get a better grip.

Good Luck!

When my numbered knob came from MGW, I couldn't get mine to budge either. Sears to the rescue!!! It is called the Strap Wrench. I think Bob Villa (sp) hawks them on TV. Worked like champ. Tough rubber strap wrapped around the meat of the knob and it didn't stand a chance.

Funny mines kindof loose. Got to turn it and tighten all the time while I drive. Clutch pedal cover came off also. Maybe I just drive to hard and fast.

Talk to the ball and make sure it understands that you are going to put it back on the new shifter. If it fears total replacement by a new shift knob then it will fight you every inch of the way and refuse to budge.

That did it. Came off with no effort, so I obviosly loosened it with all my yelling & grunting. Also, it came with a smaller wrench for the kitchen, so the wife was pleased with that & now I won't have to open the pickels or jelly anymore.
