While driving today, something popped into my head. You know how you shouldn't downshift into 1st gear if you're going over 15 MPH? I personally don't ever downshift into 1st unless I'm going under 10 MPH, even then sometimes I'll still go into 2nd. Anyway, what if, say, you're at a red light, it turns green, then you put it into 1st and start driving. Then, you hit maybe 35 MPH, and you depress the clutch all the way in, but instead of shifting, you take your foot off the clutch and keep it in 1st. Would that be the same thing as trying to downshift into 1st, damage-wise, assuming your car didn't have those gear locks?
