Hey, I'm thinkin about getting one of those widescreen TV's. Are most of the HD compatible?? And does it horizontally distort the vision of normal television programming?? I'll probably be watching more TV than DVD's, but it's annoying when normal TV's have the 'black lines' for widescreen movies.

Badkharma,

Most Widescreen TV's are HD compatible/upgradeable. If you watch more standard TV than DVD's or High Def. programming, a widescreen TV may not be for you. For standard programming a widescreen TV will horizontally distort the picture. Most widescreens allow oyu to choose from several formats to adjust a picture to the screen. Mine allows five different formats to fit the picture to the scrren. Even with a widescreen TV there will be black bars at the top and the bottom of the screen for most DVD's. The black lines are much smaller than on a normal TV and are far less obtrusive, but they are still there for about 80% of DVD movies. The other thing to consider is wear and tear on the picture tubes. IF you watch a lot ofstandard TV on the widescreen and format it to be in the 4:3 aspect ratio with the black-grey lines on the sides it will wear the picture tubes unevenly. I have had my bigscreen HD TV for a year and I'm already seeing the effects from this, and I only watch maybe 15 hours of standard TV a month.

IF you watch a lot of DVD's or subscribe to Dishnetwork or DirecTv A High Def. widescreen TV is definitely the way to go. The picture that you get from a high def channel or from a 480p DVD player is awesome. IT is a must for a large screen.

I have the Mitsubishi 53" 16x9 widescreen format HDTV and I love it.
I do not have the HDTV receiver just yet, waiting for the price to come to something close to being reasonable.
The progressive scan DVD player looks incredible, and the new Xbox I got for christmas puts out either 480p (Progressive scan DVD quality) or 1080 (TRUE HDTV quality)depending on the game.
Can't say enough good things about it....I'm not sure how escrotumus has his laptop connected, it looks like a S-Video connection. My set actually has SVGA inputs on the back, but I don't have a laptop to hook it up, so I have never surfed the net on it.

Yeah its a pretty sweet setup. I bought the TV about 2 years ago just as they came out and they are about half as much now as they were then  I have a progressive scan DVD player and a 6.1 DTS capable receiver with digital cable. No HD decoder yet because i live in an apartment and satellite in an apartment is a P.I.T.A. I am going to buy a house later this year and then i will finish up my setup with a satellite/HD receiver combo. I just use the super video to rca adapter with my laptop to jack in the video to the TV and a line out to RCA adapter to jack the sound in from the laptop. I can listen to mp3's on the laptop and have the sound come to the surround sound of the 6.1 receiver that way. I also run a wireless access point at home with a connection to a cable modem for internet access anywhere in the apartment...makes for easy surfing. For now i just have a dreamcast, but i have my eye on that xbox, im just too damn cheap to pay 500 bucks for something and only have one game (300 for the unit, 50 per game and 100 for all the extra things that it always needs i.e. memory packs, controllers, etc.). Id probably never use it anyway because i very rarely play the dreamcast and i must have 30 games for it. Driving games on the 56" 16x9 are pretty amazing though and the xbox does do 5.1 surround and component out...hmmmmm  Nascar on the xbox is calling me.....Escrotumus......Escrotumus...Escr...

This is almost the exact same setup I have. I have the Mitsu 55" Widescreen, Toshiba 480P DVD player, Dishnetwork 6000 High Def Decoder/sattelite receiver, and Microsoft XBOX. For audio I have a Marantz Dolby Dig/DTS preamp, Carver Amps, B & W speakers and Velodyne 15" subwoofer. Makes going to the movie theater seem redundant. (I love my toys)

My father-in-law has a 50" HDTV and I have hooked up my computer to it several times. The only problem is that the video card on my computer will not let the resolution go greater than 640x480 through the S-Video. I guess that it didn't know about HDTV when it came out
