I've read several versions of how the car sounds in the movie were created. The most common one is that it was simply the 68 car(s), but amplified. If that's the case, does anyone know what kind of exhaust setup the movie car had? I'm guessing, at the least, it wasn't choked by emissions controls that we have today.

I believe it was actually a GT40 exhaust dubbed over.

My neighbor had a '68 fastback, his had an H-pipe as part of the stock dual system. Of course we threw all this in the trash and installed headers!!! I seem to recall H-pipes being a PITA when it came to clutch replacement time.

One item I heard that they took out the transverse muffler (mounted behind the rear end) and left in the resinators.
I second the motion even though the consensus seems to be the dubbed GT 40. I had a 68 1/2 Cobra Jet at the time. Took the transverse muffler off, had 2 pipes coming out of the stock location and ran on the resonators. Sounded just like Bullitt.

According to David Kunz...

On his site, "How to Bullitt Your Mustang," David Kunz says this:

"Don't count on duplicating that raspy, uncorked sound of the Mustang in the film. What you're hearing is dubbed-in sound of a race car on a track as McQueen supposedly double-clutches his way along the chase route. For a more accurate depiction of what the movie cars sounded like, listen from the point where Bullitt leaves the car wash until the Charger takes off smoking its tires. What you're hearing is the Mustang's 390 V8 crackling through just the two tiny glass pack resonators ahead of the rear axle. On big-block '67 and '68 Mustangs (and all Shelbys), these were installed at the factory along with a transverse muffler just ahead of the gas tank."

Through the years I have kept just about every article I have come across on the Bullitt movie. I can not find it right now but I remember reading where after they movie they were doing recordings of the mustang shifting and burnouts at some race track. I think they blew the rear end during this time. Maybe this was the one that did not survive.

Anyway, with all the other "realistic" stuff in the movie does it make sense that they would dub in a GT40 sound track?

After Keller and Yates finished editing the chase, John Kean went to work recording and mixing in the sound of the revving engines and squealing tires. Kean and Bud Ekins took the cars to Willow Springs Raceway near Los Angeles for the recording.
Thanks for sharing Larry. Best article I have read on The Chase.

Mucho gracias, Larry. Very interesting. You have restored my faith in the authenticity of the movie! (I thought the "dubbing" thingy was a little off too).

P.S. I stole the link and am moving it along to some friends.

Actually, the "final" movie sound can be replicated with the exhaust setup on 2679. This was the setup that was supposed to be on the '01s but the Ford marketing guys overruled the engineering folks. Scott Hoag has this setup on his '01 Bullitt "Reload", and I replicated his setup on my '01 Bullitt "Recoil".
