Who knew about the Bullitt a year ago except for enthusiasts? The Bullitt is getting a lot of press now that they are no longer made. What good does that do Ford? Ford should have played up the car to help promote the ENTIRE company and its heritage...
Chad McQueen sits in a San Francisco cafe pretending to read the paper but watching his quarry through the reflection in a window..a black car across the street parked suspiciously in front of the bank.
The bad guys leave the bank and drive away in a hurry.
Waiter asks, "Any thing else for you today, Officer?"
McQueen's already out of his seat running for the door, "No thanks, Pops, put it on my tab."
As Chad jumps in his 2001 Bullitt he notices a Green 68 Fastback giving chase also.
The three cars run through San Francisco and wind up on the highway.
Chad pulls up alonside the 68 and looks over. Steve McQueen (through a little digital magic)looks back and winks. The two Mustangs are side-by-side at wide open throttle, the V-8's screaming, riding off into the sunset together after the bad guys.

I am glad that there was no publicity because I probably would not have been able to get into one so late in the year. The late publicity is great now, though, because it stems interest and respect for our cars to the public, not to mention keeping the resale value up.

I thought it would be neat if some movie producer would be able to get a 2004 Dodge Charger concept car the Dodge was thinking about producing. Paint it black, add to ugly bad guys and a 2001 DHG Bullitt and go from there. The only question would be, "What actors would you have star in the movie?" Perhaps Chad McQueen??? I smell a sequel!!

Click on the link below to see the 2004 Charger Mopar should build!!!!!!!

I would put this right up there with the "retro" John Wayne commercials. Sends shivers up and down my back thinking of it.

This would have been really cool.

That would be a GREAT comercial.

As far as Rusty goes, I have not heard of that one. If anyone finds anything on it, I know I would sure like to see it.

Take care.

Several years ago, Ford of Europe produced a commercial for a then-new coupe called the Puma. In the spot, Steve McQueen's image was digitally removed from the Bullitt footage and digitally placed into the Puma so that it appeared he was "driving" it through San Francisco. At the end, he backs the Puma into a garage right next to his "old" '68 Mustang and a motorcycle resembling the one in "The Great Escape." He then gets out of the car and he and everything else in the garage except the Puma fade away. The tag line on the screen was "Puma. A Driver's Dream."

The ad won several awards and did show up in the U.S. on one of the "Best Foriegn Commercial" specials. It was very convincing and it was amazing how well they pulled off the effect. Every shot had to be matched just so. As an example, when he backs the Puma into the garage, we see McQueen stick his head out the window to look rearward. That was the shot of him doing the same in the Mustang after overshooting the turn at Larkin and Chestnut.

Great, right? Why not use the same technique to advertise the Mustang, as was suggested here? It would cost a small fortune. That 1997 Puma spot is estimated to have cost over $1,000,000 by the time they were done: Six days of location shooting in San Francisco; rights to Steve McQueen's image; rights to use the Bullitt footage from Warner Brothers; rights to the Lalo Schifrin music; etc...it all adds up. Given Ford's current financial situation and the Mustang's relatively low volume, it would be unlikely they could pull it off.

The Puma commercial is somewhere on the web, but I don't have the link anymore.

Wanna see real car commercials?? If you have a fast internet connection go to http://www.bmwfilms.com

The one I like the best is "Star". This must be the best car "commercial" ever made. It's about 5 minutes long stars Madonna and is directed by Guy Richie. Ever time I see it I have an uncontrolable urge to go buy a M5.. then I remember the price!
