Well, what seems to be the general opinion here regarding the "Moose Balls" when installing an aluminum d/s? With the large group d/s purchases lately, what did everyone do with their "Balls"?

Good question! For us non-mechanical types,
what is the function of these things, other
than being a rusty eye sore?

It is a vibration damper. If you look at it, it is mounted on rubber mounts. From what I've been told is that is it set up for stock gearing(frequency or something). I removed mine on my last 3 Mustangs without even noticing. It only weighs about 8#s, so not that big of a deal.

Barnaby you are correct. I am not 100% sure in this case what it is used for but most of the time it is to dampen driveline noise/vibration. The biggest being Axle whine. I use to be the driveshaft engineer at DiamlerChrysler (trucks and jeeps) so I had to play with these things a lot. By changing gears or driveshaft the damper is basically useless. This is because the damper is tuned to a certain frequency and with any changes the vibration frequency would changed too. If you take it off and notice nothing different, good because you just saved your self some pounds off your vehicle.... Hope this helps!?! :???:

Bullitt2764,

Well said. You basically elaborated on exactly what my friend who runs a Mustang/Viper tuning shop said. He said, "It's there to dampen the stock driveshaft's imbalance problems."

I guess I'll have a new paperweight this weekend!

Eric

I took mine off this past weekend in preparation for the aluminum driveshaft that I will install this weekend. I have noticed no vibration at steady speeds up to 80mph.
