The last 6 numbers are the build sequence, mine is 256266, although I know that they didn't build half that many. don't know what the start # was, or what the story is.
Basically, here's the breakdown:
Pos 1 - 1 Made in USA
Pos 2 - F Ford
Pos 3 - A Automobile (Trucks have 'T')
Pos 4 - L Airbags w/manual belts
Pos 5 - P Passenger car
Pos 6&7 - 42 GT Coupe
Pos 8 - X BULLITT 4.6 Liter 2V V8 (GT's have 'W')
Pos 9 - X Check digit, can be anything
Pos 10 - 1 Model year 2001
Pos 11 - F Plant (Dearborn)
Pos 12-17 Sequence #

Thanks for the breakdown.... although I am a little confused as the VIN on my Bullitt starts 1FAFP42X21F. Any idea what an F in the fourth position means? Maybe I got the experimental airbags that deploy along the outside to keep morons from dinging my doors
Also, does this mean that position 8 in the VIN can be used to prove the car is a real Bullitt?? That would mean that the sticker isn't the only way to tell whether a Bullitt is genuine or not. Cool.

Actually, I checked my VIN and I too have an 'F' in the fourth position. Again, this digit indicates the airbag/safety belt setup. My guess is that 'F' represents a car with the '2nd Generation' airbags, the ones that only maim your children instead of potentially killing them.
Yes, that's what it is. My car, #4601 has the same date. I think they assign production dates once a week, meaning our cars could have been built anytime that week, but am not sure. Is Mr T or CNB out there for comment?
