Norman, You're talking big bucks here I think. First off, where are you going to get a Cobr R engine? They only made 300 of them....

You would have to change the suspension to independant or you would have no control over the vehicle. You would have to change over the exhaust system. The drive line would have to be changed. You would have to get a Cobra R hood so it would fit over the engine. The brakes would have to be changed as the Bullitt brakes wouldn't be enough to stop it with. (The R has special brakes). You would have to change over to a 6-speed transmission.

There is so much hp to the wheels in the R that you really have to pay attention or you would lose it in a minute!

They started out with a 6 cylinder Ford Mustang at SVT. And by the time they finished with all the "goodies", it was around $65,000.

Norman, you asked! You got me started on the R.....

There are lots of 400hp+ GT's with stock brakes and transmitions. If you put that kind of power into an independant rear you will break it. Many Cobra owners are ditching the rear because it is not as strong. The engine will not fit under your hood.

I say go for it... The rear end will handle more power than the IRS in the Cobra R, the tranny would end up being the weak link though. A T-56 would be the obvious choice for replacement, althought Tremec makes a couple of other 5 speeds that would handle the power with no trouble. Some sort of hood will be a necessity as well.

There would certainly be some fab work required, but it has been done before by DIYers. Why stop with just the 5.4 though, might as well add the blower and make it real beast.

Before everyone runs off to dreamland-call Ford--do they even sell the 2000 engine as a 50 state smog certified crate engine??? I do not believe so. Your next call should be to the 'song cops' in your State. Here in Ca you will never get that switch past smog check II. Sorry--just add the blower--more hp and cheaper.

Cheaper solution-sell your Bullitt--getting $23,000 to 25,000 on the market and then buy the new Cobra-way underrated at 390 hp--more likely 410 to 425. More power than the R with alot less front end weight. And a factory warranty to boot.
