Ok, I've been stuck in this meeting all morning and they have about pushed me into a homicidal rage because we keep rehashing the same crap as the last 10 meetings without any solutions. So I got to vent on a subject that has bothered me for years.

Why do the manufacturers design a nice car, put on custom wheels costing several hundred dollars, and then ruin the look by sticking ugly lead weights costing 2 cents on the outside of the wheels? Where's the pride in workmanship? Hint for manufacturers and suppliers: take a little extra time and put the weights on the inside where they are hidden. I realize that this is a small thing that I can fix myself, but it bugs me that I have to. There, blood pressure returning to normal. Urge to kill fading.

Excellent point! It bugs the heck out of me
too! Vipers come from the factory with stick
ons inside, why not other cars? I took my
clip ons off the day I bought the Bullitt and
replaced them with stick ons inside the
spokes...even though the Goodyear center told
me not to do it since maximum balancing could
not be achieved with stick ons. I have not
noticed any vibrations or uneven wear with
the stick ons inside the wheel. Like you, I
did not like the look of clip ons and did not
want a "brake dust corrosion" mark on the
rim when the weight would be placed elsewhere
when rebalanced with new tires.

BTW...hope things iron out at work!

Here's the answer to boring meetings...

Do you keep falling asleep in meetings and seminars? What about those long and boring conference calls? Here's a way to change all of that.

1. Before (or during) your next meeting, seminar, or conference call, prepare your "Bullshit Bingo" card by drawing a square -- I find that 5" x 5" is a good size -- and dividing it into columns - five across and five down. That will give you 25 1-inch blocks.

2. Write one of the following words/phrases in each block:

a) synergy
b) strategic fit
c) core competencies
d) best practice
e) bottom line
f) revisit
g) take that off-line
h) 24/7
i) out of the loop
j) benchmark
k) value-added
l) proactive
m) win-win
n) think outside the box
o) fast track
p) result-driven
q) empower (or empowerment)
r) knowledge base
s) at the end of the day
t) touch base
u) mindset
v) client focus(ed)
w) ballpark
x) game plan
y) leverage

3. Check off the appropriate block when you hear one of those words/phrases.

4. When you get five blocks horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, stand up and shout "BULLSHIT!"

Testimonials from satisfied "Bullshit Bingo" players:

* "I had been in the meeting for only five minutes when I won."
--Stan L., New Jersey

* "My attention span at meetings has improved dramatically."
--John A., Pittsburgh

* "What a gas! Meetings will never be the same for me after my first win."
--Mike Armstrong. New York City

* "The atmosphere was tense in the last process meeting as 14 of us waited for the fifth box."
--Alice D., Dallas

Now that is funny!

BTW, a very good friend of mine named Chris
Collins recently left AT&T and he lives in
Lawrenceville too. Do you know him? I cannot
remember what division he was in, sorry.

227 lost the left front tire. When the tire shop put the new tire on they put the weights on the inside. I wish I could have sent them the car so they could do all the rims ... Sure looks nice on that one rim though.

Take care.

I believe they call that a "static wheel balance". Well, that is what we called it in high school auto shop =)

Karl, that's my definition of static versus dynamic also. Static balancing is the old "bubble balance" method where the wheel and tire are stationary. Static balancing is basically one dimensional and addresses the balance around the circumference of the tire/wheel and thus eliminates up and down imbalance (which causes shake). Dynamic balancing requires spinning the tire/wheel and is two dimensional because it also eliminates side to side imbalance that causes shimmy. So dynamic balancing is the preferred method because it addresses tire/wheel imbalance both around the assembly and between the outer and inner faces. Hope this didn't bore everyone to tears.

My last car had 225/R17 Goodyears and crome rims...never did I let them be on the outside. They complained and after 30k the tires had worn perfectly all around.

These tire shop guys should be thanking you if it truely will not balance properly...it just means you'll be in for another set of BadYears.

I remember in highschool we put all the weights on the inside of the rim. Looks so much better when it's balanced statically. I thinking I should go back and visit my old shop teacher and have him put all the weights on the inside for me and let the students drool over a Bullitt. My old shop teacher if pretty much the only person who I would let touch my car.

I put 30mm spacers on the rear this weekend and in the process I removed the outside weights from all 4 wheels and put stick-on weights inside the spokes. I even bought a digital scale so I could match the precise weight. Seems to have worked fine, I haven't detected any vibration. A couple of the wheels have small nicks where the original lead weights were installed, that is annoying.
